- A cheaper package is often just a shorter one, so compare nights and places.
- Ask for hotel names, not just a category.
- Check what's excluded: union taxis, gondola tickets and heaters.
- Read independent reviews and the cancellation terms.
Search for Kashmir tour packages and you'll find hundreds of options, many with prices that look almost too good.
We see the other side of this every week, when guests send us quotes from other agencies and ask why ours is different. Here are the six checks we'd make ourselves, so you can compare fairly and choose a Kashmir travel agency you can trust.
1. Finding the best package for Kashmir: are you comparing like with like?
Check nights, places and stays before you compare prices.
Count the nights, note which places are day trips and which include an overnight stay, and look for a houseboat night. A cheaper package is often just a shorter one. The best holiday packages for Kashmir aren't always the cheapest; they're the ones that fit your dates and travel style.
2. What's included, and what isn't?
Good packages spell out both, line by line.
The best tour packages for Kashmir list the hotel category, meals, whether the cab is private or shared, and the Shikara ride. Look for the exclusions too, especially union taxis, gondola tickets and heater charges. When two agencies list the same inclusions, you're comparing the best travel packages for Kashmir fairly.
3. Which hotels will you stay in?
Ask for names, not just "deluxe".
A good tour operator in Srinagar will happily name the hotels or houseboats, or at least give you two or three options per night.
4. Is the agency local, or does it have local support?
Local teams can fix problems the same day.
Kashmir tour operators based in the valley can react quickly if a road closes or the weather turns. Ask who you'll call if something goes wrong at 9 PM in Pahalgam. Also check that the agency is registered with the J&K Department of Tourism.
5. What do real customers say?
Read independent reviews, not just testimonials on the agency's own site.
Google reviews and recent traveller feedback give a far more honest picture.
6. What happens if you need to cancel?
Read the cancellation terms before you pay.
Weather and road conditions do sometimes disrupt plans. Make sure you know what happens to your money if you need to change dates or cancel. Ours are on our refunds and cancellations page.

We put all of this in writing before you pay a rupee. Send us any other agency's quote and we'll talk you through the differences honestly, or browse our Kashmir tour packages.
Why choosing the right package matters
Choosing the right Kashmir tour package shapes your whole trip, and the cheapest headline price is rarely the best value. Packages vary enormously in the hotels they use, whether the cab is private or shared, which meals and sightseeing are included, and what is quietly left out. Two trips at the same price can deliver very different experiences.
Getting the choice right means you pay for what matters to you and avoid surprises on the ground. It is worth spending a little time comparing properly rather than booking the first or cheapest option. Below is how to compare packages fairly, what to ask, the types of package available, and the warning signs that tell you to look elsewhere.
What should a good package include?
A good Kashmir package clearly states its inclusions. Look for named hotels and houseboats rather than a vague category, a private cab for your sightseeing, breakfast and dinner, airport or station transfers, and the main sightseeing across Srinagar and the valleys, usually with a complimentary Shikara ride.
Just as important is what is excluded, which should be stated openly: typically the Gulmarg Gondola, union taxis to the far side valleys, pony rides, lunch, and winter room heaters. A trustworthy operator lists both sides in writing. If a package lists only glossy highlights and hides the exclusions, you will likely meet those costs as surprises during the trip, so insist on the full picture before you book.
What questions should you ask before booking?
Before you book, ask a few pointed questions. Which exact hotels and houseboats will I stay in, and of what category? Is the cab private or shared, and for the whole trip? Which meals are included? What is not included, and what will those extras cost? What are the payment schedule and the cancellation terms?
Also ask who you will reach if something goes wrong at 9 PM in Pahalgam, because on-the-ground support matters. A good operator answers all of this clearly and in writing. Vague or evasive answers are a warning sign. The more precisely you pin down the details before you pay, the fewer surprises you will meet once your trip begins.
How do you compare two packages fairly?
To compare packages fairly, line them up on the same details rather than just the price. Put the hotel names, the room category, the cab type, the included meals and the exclusions side by side, and only then look at the cost. A slightly higher quote with named 3-star hotels and clear inclusions is often better value than a cheaper one full of vague promises.
Watch for the common tactic of a low headline price that balloons once the excluded extras are added. Factor in the gondola, union taxis, pony rides and heaters so you are comparing the real total. Get both quotes in writing, and judge them on the complete picture. This simple discipline reveals which package is genuinely the better deal.
What types of Kashmir packages are there?
Kashmir packages come in several styles, so match the type to your trip. There are honeymoon and couple packages built around romance and houseboats; family packages paced for children and elders; group and sharing-basis packages that keep the per-head cost low; and luxury packages with 5-star stays and a private pace.
There are also theme packages: winter and ski trips, trekking and adventure trips, Vaishno Devi and pilgrimage combinations, and short weekend getaways. Durations range from a two-night taste to a two-week Ladakh add-on. Knowing which type you want narrows the field quickly. What are the warning signs to avoid?
A few red flags should make you pause. Be wary of a price that seems far too low, which usually means a poor hotel or heavy hidden extras. Beware vague descriptions like deluxe category with no hotel names, pressure to pay a large amount immediately, and reluctance to put the inclusions, exclusions and cancellation terms in writing.
Also be cautious of operators with no clear contact or support during the trip, and of deals that rush you into booking. A genuine operator is transparent, patient and happy to answer questions. If something feels evasive or too good to be true, it usually is. Trust the operator who gives you the whole picture clearly over the one with only the lowest number.
Frequently asked questions

What do hotel star categories really mean in Kashmir?
In Kashmir, a three-star is a clean, comfortable family hotel; four- and five-star properties add space, views and better food.
Hotel ratings in Kashmir do not always match the big-city standard. A good three-star hotel in Srinagar or Pahalgam usually means clean rooms, a geyser for hot water, a decent restaurant and friendly staff, but small bathrooms and basic decor. Four-star hotels add larger rooms, better views, central heating in some properties, and a wider menu. Five-star resorts in Srinagar and Gulmarg offer luxury rooms and service. When comparing packages, ask for the exact hotel names, look them up on maps and recent guest reviews, and do not rely on the star label alone.
Which cab type is right for your group?
A sedan for two people, an SUV like an Innova for three to five, and a Tempo Traveller for larger groups.
A sedan such as a Dzire or an Etios is fine for couples on main roads. For families or anyone travelling in winter, an SUV such as an Innova is more comfortable and handles snow better. Groups of eight or more do best in a Tempo Traveller. Always check whether the cab is private for your group or shared, and whether the same driver stays with you for the whole trip, which makes a real difference.
What do meal plan codes mean?
CP is breakfast only, MAP is breakfast and dinner, and AP includes all three meals.
Packages often use hotel meal codes. CP (Continental Plan) includes breakfast. MAP (Modified American Plan) includes breakfast and dinner, the most popular choice in Kashmir because you are usually out sightseeing at lunchtime. AP (American Plan) includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our packages use MAP, so you only need to find lunch on the road.
How far in advance should you book?
Two to three months ahead for peak seasons, and four to six weeks for the rest of the year.
For April (the tulip season), May and June, and the Christmas to New Year period, book early, because good hotels and gondola tickets fill quickly. For autumn and early winter, four to six weeks is usually enough. Booking early also lets you get better flight fares, which often cost more than the package itself in peak season.
What payment terms are normal?
A booking advance of about 25 to 30 percent, with the balance before or on arrival.
Reputable operators usually ask for a partial advance to confirm hotels and the balance closer to the trip or on arrival. Be careful with any agency that wants the full amount months in advance with no written itinerary. Always ask for a proper invoice, the cancellation policy in writing and a bank transfer or UPI payment to a business account, not a personal one. Our refunds and cancellations page explains our terms.
Why does a local Kashmir operator make a difference?
Local teams know the roads, the weather and the hotels personally, and they can fix problems quickly.
A local operator in Srinagar can change your plan the same day if a road closes, swap a hotel if something is wrong, and send help if a cab breaks down. They also know which hotels are genuinely good this season. Look for an operator registered with the J&K Department of Tourism, with a real office address and phone numbers you can call. Makpie Tour and Travels is based in Srinagar; see our about page.
Should you choose a fixed package or a customised trip?
A fixed package is simpler and cheaper; customisation suits special interests or longer trips.
Fixed packages are designed around routes that work and hotels we trust, so they are good value and easy to book. Customised trips make sense if you want to add Gurez, a trek, a houseboat stay, extra nights in one place, or a special celebration. Many good operators will adjust a ready-made package for you at no extra planning charge.
