Katra to Kashmir Tour Package Guide: Vande Bharat Train, Road Route and Itineraries

Key takeaways
  • The Vande Bharat from Katra to Srinagar takes about three hours.
  • By road, Katra to Srinagar is about 250 km and six to eight hours.
  • Plan at least four days in the Kashmir valley after Vaishno Devi.
  • Book train seats and the Vaishno Devi helicopter well in advance.

Katra, the base town for the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, has become one of the most popular starting points for a Kashmir holiday. Pilgrims complete their darshan, rest for a night and then continue north into the valley, combining devotion with some of the most beautiful scenery in India.

Since the rail link opened, the Katra to Kashmir journey has become easier than ever, and a Katra to Kashmir tour package is now one of our most requested trips. This guide explains the train and road options, how long each takes, what it costs and how to build a Katra to Kashmir tour package that flows smoothly from the yatra to the lakes and meadows.

How far is Kashmir from Katra?

About 250 km by road to Srinagar, or about three hours by the Vande Bharat train.

Katra sits in the foothills near Jammu, while Srinagar lies in the Kashmir valley beyond the Pir Panjal range. The road route via Udhampur, the Chenani-Nashri tunnel, Ramban, the Navyug tunnel and Qazigund covers about 250 km. The rail line follows a more direct path through tunnels and over high bridges, which is why it is so much faster.

What is the Vande Bharat from Katra to Srinagar like?

Fast, clean and spectacular, crossing the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges and dozens of tunnels.

The Vande Bharat service between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar is a highlight in itself. The journey takes about three hours, with comfortable reclining seats, large windows and onboard food. The route crosses the Chenab rail bridge, one of the highest railway bridges in the world, and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge, and passes through long tunnels before emerging into the green Kashmir valley. Book on the IRCTC website as early as possible; seats sell out quickly in peak season. Carry original ID, as there are security checks at the stations.

How do you travel from Katra to Srinagar by road?

By private cab on NH44, about six to eight hours with stops.

The road journey takes you through Udhampur, the Chenani-Nashri tunnel, the Ramban gorge along the Chenab river, Banihal and the Navyug tunnel to Qazigund, the gateway to the valley. From there, it is a pleasant drive past Awantipora's temple ruins and Pampore's saffron fields to Srinagar. It is a long day but offers door-to-door comfort and the chance to stop where you like. Landslides around Ramban can cause delays, especially in the monsoon, so check the highway status before leaving.

Can you go from Katra directly to Pahalgam?

Yes, by road; turn off at Anantnag before Srinagar to save time.

If your itinerary starts with Pahalgam, you can drive from Katra straight to Pahalgam via Qazigund and Anantnag, avoiding Srinagar on the first day. It takes about seven to eight hours. This works well for a loop: Katra, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Srinagar, and fly home from Srinagar.

Should you stop at Patnitop?

If you are driving and have time, yes; it breaks the journey nicely.

Patnitop is a short detour from the highway and makes a pleasant overnight stop, with pine forests and cool air. It is especially good for families and elderly travellers who prefer shorter drives. Our Jammu, Patnitop and Kashmir tour includes it.

How many days should you plan after Vaishno Devi?

At least four days in Kashmir; five or six is better.

After the yatra, most pilgrims are tired, so plan a rest evening in Katra or take the train the next morning. In the valley, four days lets you see Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam; five or six adds Sonamarg and a more relaxed pace.

How much does a Katra to Kashmir tour package cost?

Roughly ₹20,000 to ₹35,000 per person for 5 to 7 days in 3-star hotels, excluding flights and train tickets.

A package typically includes hotels in Katra and Kashmir, a private cab, breakfast and dinner, and a Shikara ride. Helicopter tickets, train fares, the gondola and union taxis are usually extra. Our Jammu and Kashmir trip cost guide has a full breakdown.

Train or road: which is better?

The train for speed and comfort, the road for flexibility and families with luggage.

The train saves several hours and avoids landslide risks, but you need cabs at both stations and must manage luggage on and off. The road gives flexibility, stops along the way and door-to-door service. Many of our guests take the train for the journey and use a private cab in Kashmir.

When is the best time for a Katra to Kashmir trip?

March to June and September to November; avoid Navratri crowds unless you book early.

Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather in both Katra and Kashmir. Navratri brings huge crowds to Vaishno Devi, so book well ahead if you travel then. Summer is hot in Katra but lovely in Kashmir. Winter is cold in Kashmir with snow in the hills, while Katra stays mild.

Tips for a smooth trip

  • Register for Vaishno Devi online in advance.
  • Book the helicopter and Vande Bharat seats as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Rest well after the yatra before travelling on.
  • Carry warm clothes for Kashmir.
  • Keep one buffer day for weather or highway delays.

Frequently asked questions

How do I go from Katra to Srinagar? By the Vande Bharat train (about 3 hours) or by road (6 to 8 hours). Is there a direct train? Yes, from Katra to Srinagar. How far is Katra from Srinagar? About 250 km by road. Can I combine Vaishno Devi with Kashmir? Yes, it is a very popular route. What is the cost of a Katra to Kashmir package? Roughly ₹20,000 to ₹35,000 per person for 5 to 7 days. See also our Jammu and Kashmir itinerary.

What should you see on the road from Katra?

The Chenab gorge at Ramban, the tunnels, Qazigund's first views of the valley, Awantipora and Pampore.

If you drive, the journey is full of interest. The road follows the Chenab river through the deep Ramban gorge, then crosses under the Pir Panjal through the Navyug tunnel. Emerging at Qazigund, you see the Kashmir valley open out ahead, a moment many travellers remember. Stop at Awantipora for the 9th-century temple ruins and at Pampore for saffron and kahwa before reaching Srinagar.

How should pilgrims pace the trip?

Rest after the yatra, keep the first Kashmir day light, and avoid long drives back to back.

The Vaishno Devi yatra is physically demanding, especially for those who walk. Give yourself an evening of rest in Katra, take the train or a comfortable cab the next morning, and spend your first afternoon in Srinagar on a gentle Shikara ride rather than rushing to Gulmarg. This pacing keeps the whole trip enjoyable for every member of the family.

Where should you stay in Katra before the train?

Close to the railway station or the yatra base, depending on your schedule.

Katra has hundreds of hotels, from simple lodges to comfortable 3-star and 4-star properties. If you are taking the Vande Bharat to Srinagar early in the morning after your yatra, a hotel near Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station saves time. If you want to be close to the Banganga start point and the market, stay in the town centre. Book well in advance during Navratri, summer holidays and long weekends, when Katra fills up. Many hotels offer early check-in and late check-out for pilgrims, which is useful if you return from the Bhawan late at night.

How do you get from the station to your hotel in Srinagar?

By pre-booked cab; Srinagar railway station is at Nowgam, on the southern side of the city.

Srinagar's railway station lies outside the city centre, so you will need a cab to reach Dal Lake, the Boulevard or your houseboat. The drive takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis and autos are available at the station, but booking a pickup in advance avoids waiting with luggage. If you travel with us, our driver meets you at the station and stays with you for the rest of your Kashmir trip.

What should you carry on the train?

Original ID, a warm layer, snacks, water and any medicines.

Security checks at Katra and Srinagar stations are thorough, so arrive early and carry original photo ID for every adult. Keep a warm layer handy; the valley is cooler than Katra, and air-conditioned coaches can feel cold. Food is available on board, but carrying some snacks and water is sensible, especially with children. Keep heavy luggage to a minimum, as you must manage it on and off the train yourself.

Is the Katra to Kashmir trip good for families?

Yes; the train is comfortable, the yatra options suit all ages, and Kashmir is very family-friendly.

Families often find this route ideal. The yatra can be adapted with the battery car, ponies, palkis or the helicopter. The train journey is short and exciting for children, with bridges and tunnels to look out for. In Kashmir, Shikara rides, the Gulmarg gondola's Phase 1, pony rides and riverside walks in Pahalgam keep everyone happy. Choose an SUV for the valley so there is room for luggage, and keep drives to under three hours a day. See our best Kashmir family tour package.

What happens if the train is full or cancelled?

Use a private cab by road, or a short flight from Jammu to Srinagar.

In peak season, Vande Bharat seats can be sold out weeks ahead, and occasionally services are affected by weather or maintenance. The backup is a private cab on NH44, which takes six to eight hours, or a flight from Jammu to Srinagar, which takes under an hour. We always keep a road option ready for our guests, so a full train never derails the holiday.

How do you return to Katra or Jammu after Kashmir?

Most travellers fly home from Srinagar; others take the train back to Katra.

There is no need to return the same way. Srinagar airport has direct flights to Delhi, Mumbai and other cities, so most of our guests fly home from Srinagar at the end of their trip. If you need to return to Jammu or Katra, for example to catch a train home, the Vande Bharat or a road transfer works well.

Can you do this trip in winter?

Yes; Katra stays mild while Kashmir has snow, but allow for weather delays.

In winter, Vaishno Devi is less crowded and the weather in Katra is pleasant. The Kashmir valley is cold and snowy, perfect for Gulmarg and Pahalgam. The train and road can occasionally be affected by heavy snow, so keep one buffer day and pack warm clothing.

What is the best order: Vaishno Devi first or Kashmir first?

Vaishno Devi first, in most cases; it is the natural start of the journey north.

Starting with Vaishno Devi means you travel steadily north from Jammu to Katra and then into the valley, ending your trip in Srinagar, which has direct flights to most Indian cities. Doing Kashmir first and Vaishno Devi last works too, especially if you want to fly home from Jammu, but the yatra is physically demanding, and many pilgrims prefer to complete it while they are fresh at the start of the holiday. Whichever order you choose, leave a rest evening after the yatra before any long journey.
