- A 7-day Jammu and Kashmir trip costs about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 per person, excluding flights.
- Hotels and the private cab make up most of the cost.
- Vaishno Devi helicopter tickets, the gondola and union taxis are usually extra.
- Travelling in March, September to November or early December brings the best value.
Planning a trip that combines Jammu, Vaishno Devi and the Kashmir valley means budgeting for two regions, several modes of transport and a pilgrimage. It is easy to underestimate the total if you only look at a headline package price.
As a Srinagar-based operator, we quote and run these trips every week. This guide sets out what a Jammu and Kashmir trip really costs in 2026, item by item, with sample budgets and tips to save money. Prices are approximate and depend on season, hotel category and group size.
How much does a Jammu and Kashmir trip cost in total?
About ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 per person for 7 to 9 days in 3-star to 4-star hotels, excluding flights.
For two people sharing, a 7-day Jammu and Kashmir package with 3-star hotels, a private cab, breakfast and dinner usually starts at around ₹25,000 per person. Four-star hotels and a 9-day route with Patnitop push it to ₹35,000 to ₹45,000. Luxury trips with five-star hotels and helicopter darshan can exceed ₹70,000 per person. Flights to Jammu and from Srinagar are extra.
What does a package include?
Usually hotels, a private cab for the whole trip, breakfast and dinner, transfers and a Shikara ride.
Most Jammu and Kashmir packages include accommodation, a private vehicle with driver from arrival to departure, daily breakfast and dinner, sightseeing by road and a complimentary Shikara ride on Dal Lake. They usually exclude flights, train tickets, Vaishno Devi helicopter or pony charges, gondola tickets, union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, lunches and personal expenses. Always check the inclusions line by line. Our Jammu Kashmir tour packages list them clearly.
How much do hotels cost in Jammu, Katra and Kashmir?
Katra and Jammu hotels are cheaper than Kashmir; Gulmarg is the most expensive.
Rough ranges per night for a double room:
- Jammu and Katra, 3-star: about ₹2,500 to ₹5,000.
- Patnitop, 3-star: about ₹3,000 to ₹6,000.
- Srinagar, 3-star: about ₹3,000 to ₹6,000; 4-star ₹6,000 to ₹12,000.
- Houseboats: about ₹3,000 to ₹10,000 depending on category.
- Pahalgam, 3-star: about ₹3,500 to ₹7,000.
- Gulmarg, 3-star: about ₹4,000 to ₹8,000; much more in peak winter.
Hotels in Katra fill up quickly during Navratri and holidays, so book early.
What does transport cost?
A private cab for the whole trip is the biggest single cost after hotels.
For a 7-day trip, a private sedan from Jammu to Srinagar and around the valley costs roughly ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 in total, and an SUV more. The Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar costs a modest amount per seat, depending on class, but you still need cabs at both ends. Flights from Jammu to Srinagar are usually cheap if booked early. See our Jammu to Kashmir trip guide for the trade-offs.
How much does the Vaishno Devi yatra cost?
Walking is free; ponies, palkis, the battery car and the helicopter cost extra.
Registration for the yatra is free. Pony and palki rates are fixed by the Shrine Board and depend on the stretch. The battery car from Ardhkuwari to the Bhawan is inexpensive. Helicopter tickets from Katra to Sanjichhat are the main extra and must be booked on the official Shrine Board website, where fares are published; they sell out fast. The ropeway from the Bhawan to Bhairon temple costs a small amount. Budget a few thousand rupees per person if you use ponies or the helicopter. Our Vaishno Devi yatra guide explains each option.
What do activities in Kashmir cost?
Budget ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per person for the gondola, union taxis, ponies and rafting.
- Gulmarg Gondola: Phase 1 under ₹1,000 and Phase 2 a little more, per person.
- Union taxi in Pahalgam for Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari: a few thousand rupees per vehicle.
- Union taxi in Sonamarg: similar, per vehicle.
- Pony rides: fixed by local associations.
- Rafting in Pahalgam: about ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per person.
How much should you budget for food and shopping?
About ₹500 to ₹1,000 per person per day for lunches and snacks, plus whatever you shop.
With breakfast and dinner included, lunch and snacks are your daily costs. Jammu's local food is inexpensive, while hill-station restaurants cost more. Shopping is personal: saffron, dry fruit, pashmina and walnut-wood crafts are the popular buys. Read our Kashmir shopping guide.

Sample budget: 9 days for a family of four, 3-star
- Package with family rooms and an SUV: about ₹1,10,000 to ₹1,40,000.

- Food and snacks: about ₹15,000 to ₹22,000.
- Total excluding flights: roughly ₹1,47,000 to ₹2,02,000.
How does the season change the cost?
April to June, Navratri and late December are the most expensive; November and March are best value.
Kashmir hotels peak in the tulip season (April), summer holidays (May and June) and the Christmas to New Year week. Katra peaks during Navratri and summer holidays. November, early December and March offer lower prices and lovely weather. Shifting your dates by a week can save thousands.
How can you reduce the Jammu and Kashmir trip cost?
- Travel in the shoulder seasons.
- Take the train from Katra to Srinagar and book early.
- Share a vehicle with friends or family.
- Choose well-reviewed 3-star hotels rather than 4-star.
- Book a package rather than hotels and cabs separately.
- Skip Phase 2 of the gondola if the budget is tight.
Is a package cheaper than doing it yourself?
Usually yes, because operators get better hotel and cab rates and you avoid daily bargaining.
Booking hotels individually online and hiring local cabs day by day often costs more in peak season, and takes much more effort. A good package gives you a fixed price, tested hotels and a local team to call if anything changes.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Jammu and Kashmir trip cost? About ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 per person for 7 to 9 days, excluding flights. Is the Vaishno Devi helicopter included? Usually not. What is the cheapest month? November and March. Is the train cheaper than a cab? Yes, but you need cabs at both ends. Are union taxis included? Usually not. See our Kashmir trip cost guide for valley-only trips.
Why do quotes for the same route vary so much?
Hotel location, cab type, meal plan and inclusions make the difference.
Two packages with the same route can differ by thousands because one uses hotels far from the centre, a smaller car or breakfast only, or leaves out transfers and the Shikara ride. Before comparing, write down the hotel names, vehicle, meal plan and what is excluded. The cheapest quote is often not the best value once the extras are added.
A note on travel insurance
For a combined trip with a pilgrimage, mountain roads and flights, insurance is worth considering.
Weather and landslides can delay travel between Jammu and Srinagar, and flights can be disrupted by fog in winter. A basic policy covering medical care and trip delays costs little compared with the overall trip and gives peace of mind, especially for elderly travellers.
How do group size and room sharing change the cost?
Larger groups pay less per person because the vehicle cost is shared.
The private cab is a fixed cost whether it carries two people or five, so families and groups of friends pay noticeably less per person than couples. Three people sharing a room with an extra bed also reduce the per-person hotel cost. For groups of eight or more, a Tempo Traveller is usually the most economical option. When you ask for a quote, tell us the number of adults, the ages of any children and how you would like to share rooms, so the price is accurate.
What payments should you expect, and when?
A partial advance to confirm hotels, with the balance before or on arrival.
Reputable operators usually ask for about 25 to 30 percent to confirm the hotels, and the balance closer to the trip. Vaishno Devi helicopter tickets and train seats are booked separately by you or on your behalf, and paid in full when booked. Always get a written itinerary, an invoice and the cancellation terms before paying. Our refunds and cancellations page sets out our terms.
Which costs are easy to forget?
Room heaters in winter, chain fitting in snow, porters and tips, and shopping.
Small extras add up over nine days. In winter, room heaters are usually charged per night, and cabs may need snow chains in Gulmarg. Tips for drivers, Shikara boatmen and pony handlers are appreciated. Porters at Katra for luggage and pithus for children on the yatra cost extra. And almost everyone ends up buying saffron, dry fruit and shawls. Keep a contingency of about 10 percent of your budget for these.
Is a luxury Jammu and Kashmir trip worth it?
For honeymoons and special occasions, yes; the views and service make a real difference.
Luxury trips use five-star hotels in Srinagar and Gulmarg, deluxe houseboats, premium SUVs and helicopter darshan at Vaishno Devi. They cost considerably more but offer space, comfort and service that many couples and families value on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. See our Kashmir luxury tour packages.
A quick summary of costs
- Package with hotels, cab, breakfast and dinner: the largest share.
- Train, flights or helicopter tickets: booked separately.
- Activities in Kashmir: gondola, union taxis, ponies and rafting.
- Food, tips, shopping and a contingency for small extras.
Planning for each of these upfront keeps the trip relaxed and free of surprises.
How do costs compare between a 7-day and a 9-day trip?
Two extra days add roughly 20 to 30 percent to the package price, but much more comfort.
The two extra days in a 9-day itinerary add two hotel nights and two more days of cab hire, which typically raises the package price by around a fifth to a third. In exchange, you get a Patnitop night that breaks the long drive, a full day for Srinagar's gardens and old city, and slower mountain stays. For families with children or elderly members, the extra comfort is usually well worth the cost, and it also leaves a buffer for weather delays without disrupting the rest of the trip.
How do helicopter and walking options compare in cost?
Walking is free; ponies and palkis cost a few thousand rupees; the helicopter costs more and must be booked early.
For a family of four, the yatra choice can change the budget considerably. Fit walkers pay nothing beyond food and water along the path. Ponies and palkis are charged at rates fixed by the Shrine Board for each stretch. The helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat saves most of the climb and is the most expensive option, with fares published on the official booking site. Many families mix options: younger members walk while grandparents take the helicopter or a palki, and everyone meets at the Bhawan.
How much do train tickets add?
Vande Bharat fares from Katra to Srinagar are modest compared with the rest of the trip.
Train tickets for the Katra to Srinagar leg cost much less than a day of private cab hire, and they save several hours. Add the cost of cab transfers at both stations to compare fairly with driving.
Why does booking early save money?
Hotels, trains and helicopter seats get more expensive or sell out as dates approach.
For Navratri, the tulip season and summer holidays, the best-value hotels in Katra and Srinagar fill first, and helicopter and Vande Bharat seats go quickly. Booking two to three months ahead secures better rates and more choice, and protects you from paying premium last-minute prices.
