The drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg is the most travelled road trip in Kashmir. Almost every visitor makes it, and for good reason: in under two hours you go from a lakeside city to a high meadow ringed by snow peaks, with one of the world's highest cable cars at the top.

Our drivers do this journey nearly every day of the year, in sunshine, rain and heavy snow. Here is everything we tell our guests about getting from Srinagar to Gulmarg: the distance, the route, the costs, the seasons and the small things that make the day go smoothly.

How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar?

About 50 km by road, depending on where in Srinagar you start.

From the Dal Lake area, Gulmarg is roughly 50 to 55 km. From Srinagar airport, it is a little shorter, about 45 km, because the airport lies on the western side of the city, the same direction as Gulmarg. Gulmarg sits at around 2,650 m, while Srinagar is at about 1,585 m, so you climb over 1,000 m on the way, most of it in the last 13 km from Tangmarg.

How long does the drive take?

About 1.5 to 2 hours in normal conditions, and 2.5 to 3 hours or more after heavy snow.

In summer and autumn, with clear roads, the drive takes about an hour and a half. City traffic leaving Srinagar can add 20 to 30 minutes on weekday mornings. In winter, the final climb from Tangmarg to Gulmarg needs snow chains on many days, and the traffic moves slowly, so allow two and a half to three hours. On busy winter weekends and around New Year, the queue of cars on the last stretch can add even more.

What is the route from Srinagar to Gulmarg?

Srinagar to Magam, then Tangmarg, then the hill road to Gulmarg.

The usual route leaves Srinagar via the Parimpora or HMT side, passes through Narbal and Magam, and continues through villages, paddy fields and apple orchards to Tangmarg. Tangmarg is the last town before the climb; here you will find shops renting snow gear, small restaurants and taxi stands. From Tangmarg, a winding road climbs through dense pine and fir forest for about 13 km to Gulmarg. The forest drive is beautiful in every season, especially after fresh snow.

Which is the best time to leave Srinagar?

By 8 am, so you reach the gondola before the queues.

The single best tip for a Gulmarg day is to leave early, with gondola tickets already booked on the official website. The gondola queues grow quickly after 10 am, especially in winter and in May and June. Leaving Srinagar at 7:30 or 8 am gets you to Gulmarg by around 9:30, in time for the first rides. Early starts also mean clearer views, because clouds often build over the peaks in the afternoon.

How much is a taxi from Srinagar to Gulmarg?

Roughly ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 for a sedan day trip, and more for an SUV; rates change by season.

Taxi rates are set by local unions and revised each season. A return day trip by sedan usually costs between ₹2,500 and ₹4,000, and an Innova or similar SUV costs more. In winter, if your cab cannot fit chains or the police restrict non-4x4 vehicles after heavy snow, you may need to switch to a local 4x4 at Tangmarg for the last stretch, which is an extra cost. Shared taxis run from Srinagar to Tangmarg and are much cheaper, but less convenient. If you are on a package with us, the private cab is included and the driver handles the chains.

Can you take a bus from Srinagar to Gulmarg?

Yes, J&K tourism and local buses run, but a cab is far more convenient.

Some tourist buses and local buses run from Srinagar to Tangmarg and Gulmarg, mostly in peak season. They are cheap but slow, and timings are not ideal for the gondola. For most travellers, a private or shared cab is the better choice.

Do you need snow chains in winter?

Often yes, from Tangmarg upwards after snowfall.

From December to March, the road above Tangmarg can be icy or snowy. Traffic police sometimes allow only vehicles fitted with chains or 4x4s. Chain fitters wait at Tangmarg and charge a fee to fit and remove them. Experienced local drivers carry their own chains. Do not argue with police restrictions; they exist because the hill road can be dangerous when icy.

What should you rent in Tangmarg?

In winter, a snow coat, snow pants and gumboots if your own clothing is not waterproof.

Tangmarg's shops rent long padded coats, snow trousers and gumboots for the day. Agree the price before you take anything and check the zips. Many guests also hire gumboots at the gondola base in Gulmarg instead. Bring your own gloves, cap and socks.

Where can you stop on the way?

Tangmarg for tea and gear, and viewpoints in the forest above it.

The drive is short, so most people stop only at Tangmarg. In clear weather, there are viewpoints along the forest road where you can see back over the valley. If you are visiting in spring or summer, the meadows around Drung, a waterfall near Tangmarg, make a lovely short detour; in winter, Drung's waterfall sometimes freezes into dramatic ice shapes.

Should you do Gulmarg as a day trip or stay overnight?

A day trip works, but a night in Gulmarg is better if you have time.

A day trip from Srinagar is easy because of the short distance, and most short itineraries use it. Staying overnight in Gulmarg, though, lets you catch the first gondola, avoid the drive twice in one day, and see the meadow in the quiet evening and early morning light after the day-trippers leave. In winter, an overnight stay also gives you a second chance if bad weather closes Phase 2 on the first day. Our Gulmarg tour packages include a Gulmarg night.

What can you do in Gulmarg once you arrive?

Ride the gondola, play in the snow or walk the meadow, visit the churches and temples, and ski in winter.

The Gulmarg Gondola is the main attraction. Beyond it, walk around the golf course meadow, visit St. Mary's Church and the Maharani Temple, ride a pony to Khilanmarg in summer, or try sledging and skiing in winter. Our skiing in Gulmarg guide explains lessons and gear.

Can you go from Gulmarg straight to Pahalgam or Sonamarg?

Not directly; both routes pass back through Srinagar.

There is no direct road from Gulmarg to Pahalgam or Sonamarg. You return towards Srinagar and continue from there, so Gulmarg to Pahalgam takes about four to five hours and Gulmarg to Sonamarg about four. See our distance guide for all routes.

How is the drive in each season?

Easy from April to November, slower and snowier from December to March.

  • Spring (March to May): roads clear, fresh green fields, snow still on the upper slopes in March.
  • Summer (June to August): easy driving, busy weekends, pleasant temperatures.
  • Autumn (September to November): golden fields and clear skies; one of the nicest times for the drive.
  • Winter (December to February): snow chains, slower traffic and magical forest scenery.

Is the Srinagar to Gulmarg road safe?

Yes; it is a well-maintained road used daily by thousands of visitors.

The road is in good condition and well policed. The only real care needed is in winter on the icy stretch above Tangmarg, where experienced local drivers make a big difference. Follow your driver's advice and any police instructions about chains.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar? About 50 km. How long does it take? About 1.5 to 2 hours, longer in snow. What is the taxi fare? Roughly ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 for a sedan day trip. Are snow chains needed? Often, in winter above Tangmarg. Can I visit Gulmarg as a day trip? Yes, though an overnight stay is more relaxed. Is there a direct road from Gulmarg to Pahalgam? No, you go via Srinagar. For a full plan, see our Kashmir itinerary 4 days and our Gulmarg trip cost guide.

How does the drive back to Srinagar work?

Leave Gulmarg by 4 pm in winter to avoid driving the forest road after dark.

On the return journey, the road down to Tangmarg can be slippery as the temperature drops in the late afternoon, and in winter it gets dark by around 5:30 pm. Leaving Gulmarg by 4 pm gives you daylight for the hill section and avoids the evening rush of day-trippers. In summer, you can stay until 6 or 7 pm and still be back in Srinagar for dinner. If chains were fitted on the way up, they will be removed at Tangmarg on the way back.

A few small tips our drivers always share

  • Carry cash for the chain fitters, snow gear rental and snacks; card payments are not always accepted in Tangmarg.
  • Keep your gondola booking and ID handy before you reach the base.
  • Eat a proper breakfast in Srinagar; food at the top of the gondola is limited.
  • Use the toilet at Tangmarg or the gondola base before you go up.
  • In winter, wear your snow boots in the car so you are ready the moment you arrive.

Can you visit Gulmarg and Doodhpathri on the same day?

It is possible but rushed; they are on different roads and each deserves time.

Doodhpathri lies south-west of Srinagar in Budgam district, while Gulmarg lies west via Tangmarg. Connecting them means going back towards Srinagar or using small rural roads, and you end up spending most of the day driving. We recommend giving each its own day: Gulmarg for the gondola and snow, and Doodhpathri for a quiet meadow picnic.

How do you combine Srinagar to Gulmarg with your flight?

Visit Gulmarg early in the trip, and avoid flying out on the evening of a Gulmarg day.

Because Gulmarg is close to the airport side of Srinagar, some travellers try to fit it in on their last day before an evening flight. This is risky: gondola queues, snow and traffic can easily delay your return. Plan Gulmarg on day 2 or 3, and keep the last day for Srinagar sightseeing near the airport.

What is the drive like for people who get car sick?

The road is straight until Tangmarg; only the last 13 km has bends.

Most of the Srinagar to Gulmarg road runs through flat countryside. The winding stretch is the climb from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, which takes about 25 to 40 minutes. If you get motion sickness, sit in the front, take a tablet before leaving Srinagar, and ask your driver to go gently on the bends. A short stop at Tangmarg helps too.

What does the drive look like in each season?

Green paddy and orchards in summer, gold in autumn, and white forest in winter.

In spring and summer, the drive passes through bright green paddy fields, willow-lined streams and apple orchards in blossom or fruit. In autumn, the paddy turns gold and the poplars and chinars glow orange. In winter, the countryside is quiet and frosty, and after Tangmarg the forest is heavy with snow, one of the most beautiful drives in Kashmir.

How does a Gulmarg package compare with hiring a cab?

A package bundles the cab, hotel and meals at a fixed price; hiring a cab suits short day trips.

If you are only doing a Gulmarg day trip from Srinagar, hiring a cab for the day is simple. If Gulmarg is part of a longer Kashmir trip, a package with a private cab for the whole holiday is usually better value and saves daily negotiation. Our Gulmarg tour packages and Gulmarg ski package include everything from Srinagar.

How early should you book a cab for the Gulmarg day?

The evening before is usually fine; book further ahead in peak winter and on holidays.

Cabs are easy to find in Srinagar most of the year, but on winter weekends and around New Year, demand for Gulmarg is very high. Book a day or two ahead and confirm the departure time, the vehicle and whether chains are included.
