Kashmir Itinerary 4 Days: The Best Short Plan for Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam

Key takeaways
  • Four days is enough for Srinagar plus two of Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
  • Use Srinagar as a base and do one overnight outside it at most.
  • Book gondola tickets online before you travel.
  • A 3-star 4-day package costs from about ₹14,000 per person, excluding flights.

Four days is a short trip for Kashmir, but it is far from too short. With a smart plan you can enjoy Dal Lake, the Mughal Gardens and two of the big mountain destinations without spending your whole holiday in a car.

We plan many four-day trips for long weekends and short breaks, and the secret is always the same: pick two mountain destinations, not three, and use Srinagar as your base. Below is our recommended Kashmir itinerary for 4 days, plus two alternative routes depending on the season and your interests.

Is 4 days enough for Kashmir?

Yes, for Srinagar and two mountain destinations; not for all four main places.

Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg each need a full day, and Srinagar needs at least one. Trying to fit all of them into four days means two very long driving days and rushed sightseeing. Choose two of the three mountain spots and enjoy them properly. If you want everything, look at our Kashmir itinerary 6 days.

  1. Arrive in Srinagar, Shikara ride and Mughal Gardens.
  2. Day trip or overnight to Gulmarg.
  3. Srinagar to Pahalgam and back, or overnight in Pahalgam.
  4. Srinagar local sights, shopping and departure.

Day 1: Srinagar and Dal Lake

Settle in, then see the gardens and the lake.

Arrive in the morning if you can. After check-in and lunch, visit Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, the most famous Mughal Gardens, with terraces, fountains and chinar trees facing the lake. End the day with a sunset Shikara ride on Dal Lake, gliding past houseboats, floating gardens and lotus beds. In the evening, walk along the Boulevard. On a short trip, staying in a hotel near the Boulevard saves time every day.

Day 2: Gulmarg

Two hours each way from Srinagar; ride the gondola early.

Leave Srinagar by 7:30 or 8 am to reach Gulmarg before the gondola queues build. Ride Phase 1 to Kongdoori and, if the weather is good and you are fit, Phase 2 towards Apharwat. In winter, there is snow play, sledging and beginner skiing; in summer, meadows and flowers. Return to Srinagar by early evening, or stay a night in Gulmarg if you prefer and drive to Pahalgam the next day via Srinagar. Read our Srinagar to Gulmarg guide for the route.

Day 3: Pahalgam

About 90 km, three hours each way; see Betaab Valley and the Lidder river.

Start early again. On the way, stop at Pampore's saffron fields and the Avantiswami temple ruins. In Pahalgam, hire a union taxi to Betaab Valley and, if time allows, Aru. Walk beside the Lidder river and have lunch in town. A day trip is long but doable; an overnight in Pahalgam is more relaxing and lets you see Chandanwari too.

Day 4: Srinagar and departure

Shankaracharya Temple, Pari Mahal, the old city or shopping, then the airport.

Use your last morning for the views from Shankaracharya Temple or Pari Mahal, a quick visit to the Hazratbal shrine, or shopping for pashmina, saffron and dry fruit. Leave for the airport about three hours before your flight.

Alternative 1: Srinagar, Gulmarg and Sonamarg

Best for summer and early autumn when the Sonamarg road is fully open.

Swap Pahalgam for Sonamarg on day 3. Sonamarg is about 80 km from Srinagar and less tiring as a day trip than Pahalgam. Walk or ride a pony to the Thajiwas glacier, enjoy the Sindh river, and return to Srinagar for dinner. This version keeps every night in Srinagar, which suits travellers who dislike packing and unpacking.

Alternative 2: Srinagar, Pahalgam (two nights)

Best for couples and families who want a slower pace.

Spend day 1 in Srinagar, drive to Pahalgam on day 2, enjoy Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari on day 3, and return to Srinagar for your flight on day 4. You skip Gulmarg, but you get a calm, scenic stay by the river. It is especially lovely in spring and autumn.

Alternative 3: The winter 4-day plan

Two days of snow in Gulmarg, one in Pahalgam or Sonamarg's snow point.

From December to February, spend day 2 and day 3 in Gulmarg, with a night there, for snow play, sledging and a ski lesson, and keep day 4 for Srinagar. If roads are clear, add a Pahalgam day instead. Our Kashmir winter tour package shows a winter route in detail.

How much does a 4-day Kashmir trip cost?

From about ₹14,000 per person for a 3-star package, excluding flights.

A 3-night, 4-day package with a private cab, breakfast and dinner, and a Shikara ride starts at around ₹14,000 per person for two people sharing. Four-star hotels add ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 per person. Keep ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 per person for the gondola, union taxis and ponies. See our Kashmir 3 nights 4 days package, the Srinagar package for 3 nights and the cheapest Kashmir tour package.

What should you skip on a 4-day trip?

Gurez, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg and long treks; save them for a second visit.

These places are beautiful but need time. On a short trip, focus on the essentials and you will leave wanting to come back, which most of our guests do.

Tips for a short Kashmir trip

  • Take the earliest flight you can on day 1 and the latest on day 4.
  • Book gondola tickets online as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Choose a hotel near the Boulevard to save time in traffic, and book the gondola on the official website.
  • Hire a private cab for the whole trip rather than day by day.
  • Keep evenings free; Srinagar's Boulevard and Dal Lake are lovely at night.

Which month is best for a 4-day trip?

April for tulips, May to October for green meadows and open roads, and January for snow.

Every season works, but your route changes. April means adding the tulip garden on day 1. From May to October, all routes are open. In January and February, prioritise Gulmarg's snow. Read our best time to visit Kashmir guide.

Is a 4-day trip good for a honeymoon?

Yes, if you slow it down: one houseboat night and two nights in Gulmarg or Pahalgam.

Couples on a short honeymoon often prefer fewer places and more romance. Spend one night on a houseboat, then two nights in Pahalgam or Gulmarg, and skip the long day trips. Our Srinagar couple package is designed for this.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 days enough for Kashmir? Yes, for Srinagar and two mountain destinations. Should I visit Gulmarg or Pahalgam on a short trip? Gulmarg for the gondola and snow; Pahalgam for rivers and valleys. Can I see Sonamarg in 4 days? Yes, as a day trip instead of Pahalgam. What does a 4-day package cost? From about ₹14,000 per person for 3-star. What should I skip? Gurez, Doodhpathri and long treks. For a little more time, see our Kashmir itinerary 5 days.

What does a short trip feel like day to day?

Early starts, full mornings, and relaxed evenings back in Srinagar.

On a four-day trip, the rhythm is simple: leave after an early breakfast, reach your mountain destination before the crowds, enjoy the best of it, and be back in Srinagar by evening for dinner and a walk by the lake. It is busier than a longer holiday, but because the drives are only two to three hours each way, it never feels exhausting. Many guests tell us four days felt like a week because each day was so different: a lake one day, snow the next, a river valley after that.

Why a private cab makes sense on a short trip

It saves time, avoids daily bargaining and lets you start early.

With only four days, the last thing you want is to negotiate a new cab each morning. A private cab for the whole trip, with the same driver, means you can leave at 7 am without arranging anything, stop where you like for photos and tea, and change plans if the weather turns. Our packages always include a private vehicle for this reason, and our drivers double as informal guides who know every route well.

How do you get the most from a 4-day trip?

Arrive early, leave late, and use every morning for the main sight of the day.

On a short trip, the first and last days matter most. A morning flight on day 1 gives you a full afternoon for the Mughal Gardens and a Shikara ride, and an evening flight on day 4 gives you a whole last morning. Every mountain day should start early, by 7:30 or 8 am, so you reach Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg before the crowds and clouds. Keep afternoons relaxed, and your four days will feel much longer.

Should you stay in Srinagar every night?

It is the simplest option on a short trip, but one mountain night is worth considering.

Staying in Srinagar every night means you unpack once and keep the same hotel, which many short-trip travellers prefer. The trade-off is a longer drive back each evening, especially from Pahalgam. A night in Gulmarg or Pahalgam lets you enjoy the mountains in the quiet evening and morning, and cuts one return drive. If you choose a night outside Srinagar, Pahalgam is the better option because it is the furthest from the city.

What does a 4-day trip look like for a family?

Srinagar, Gulmarg and a gentle Pahalgam visit, with short days and plenty of breaks.

With children or elderly parents, keep the plan simple: day 1 for the gardens and a Shikara, day 2 for Gulmarg's Phase 1 gondola and snow or meadow play, day 3 for Pahalgam with a night there, and day 4 for a slow return to Srinagar. Skip Phase 2 of the gondola for the youngest and oldest travellers. Our Kashmir family tour packages include a comfortable SUV and family rooms.

What does a 4-day trip look like for friends?

Gulmarg and Sonamarg for adventure, plus Srinagar's food and evenings.

Groups of friends often want snow, adventure and good food. Spend day 2 in Gulmarg skiing or sledging, day 3 in Sonamarg for the glacier and a pony ride, and evenings in Srinagar eating kebabs at Khayam Chowk and walking the Boulevard. In summer, swap Sonamarg for rafting in Pahalgam. Our Kashmir friends trip is a slightly longer version.

What does a 4-day trip look like for pilgrims?

Combine a Srinagar stay with Hazratbal, Kheer Bhawani and Shankaracharya Temple.

Pilgrims and spiritually minded travellers can build a short trip around Srinagar's shrines: the Hazratbal shrine on Dal Lake, the hilltop Shankaracharya Temple, the Kheer Bhawani temple at Tulmul and the shrine of Makhdoom Sahib on Hari Parbat, alongside the gardens and a day in Gulmarg or Pahalgam.

Is a 4-day trip worth the flight cost?

Yes, if you book flights early; Kashmir rewards even a short visit.

For travellers from Delhi and north India, a long weekend in Kashmir is easy and well worth it. From further away, flights cost more and take longer, so consider adding a day or two. Either way, book flights early, as last-minute fares in peak season can exceed the cost of the package.

How do you handle bad weather on a short trip?

Keep the order of days flexible and let your driver advise you each evening.

On a four-day trip there is little room for a lost day, so flexibility matters. If rain or snow is forecast for your Gulmarg day, swap it with Pahalgam or the Srinagar day. If the Sonamarg road closes, head to Doodhpathri instead. A local operator can make these changes the same evening.

Which package matches this 4-day itinerary?

Our 3 nights 4 days packages cover this plan with a private cab and breakfast and dinner.

See our Kashmir 3 nights 4 days package for the classic route, or the Srinagar couple package for a romantic version with a houseboat night.
