Kashmir Itinerary 7 Days: A Complete One-Week Plan for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri

Key takeaways
  • Seven days lets you see the classic valley plus a quiet meadow and a houseboat night, without rushing.
  • Base in Srinagar for most of the trip and add one night in Pahalgam for a slower pace.
  • Budget roughly 20,000 to 30,000 per person for a comfortable week, excluding flights.
  • Keep one flexible day for weather, and book flights and the Gulmarg Gondola early.

Seven days is the length we quietly recommend to anyone who can spare it. Five days covers the famous four places, but a week lets Kashmir breathe. You get the same sights without the rush, plus a quiet meadow most visitors never see and a full, lazy day on Dal Lake.

This Kashmir itinerary for 7 days is the plan we build for travellers who would rather see the valley properly than quickly. It keeps a comfortable base in Srinagar, adds one night in Pahalgam, and leaves room for the weather to do what mountain weather does.

Below is the full day-by-day plan, with drive times, what to see, what it costs, and the small decisions that make a week in Kashmir feel unhurried.

Is 7 days enough for Kashmir?

Seven days is more than enough for the Kashmir valley, and close to ideal for a first visit. You can see Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam at a relaxed pace, add an offbeat meadow such as Doodhpathri or Yusmarg, and still keep a flexible day.

What a week does not quite cover is a full Ladakh add-on, which needs ten days or more. If Ladakh is the dream, plan separately. For the valley itself, seven days is the sweet spot between seeing enough and rushing, and it is the length many of our Kashmir tour packages are built around.

Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar and Dal Lake

Spend your first day settling in and easing into the valley. Flights from most cities reach Srinagar by late morning, and the transfer to your hotel takes 30 to 40 minutes.

After you check in, visit the Mughal gardens on the eastern shore of Dal Lake: Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashme Shahi, with their terraces and old chinar trees. In the late afternoon, take a one-hour Shikara ride as the light softens on the Zabarwan hills. Keep day one gentle; most people arrive a little tired, and a slow lakeside evening is the perfect start.

Day 2: Srinagar to Gulmarg day trip

Give day two to Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers, about two hours from Srinagar. In winter it is a snow field and ski resort; in summer it is green, with a golf course and gentle walks.

The highlight is the Gulmarg Gondola, which climbs towards Apharwat peak in two phases. Book your tickets in advance through the J&K Cable Car Corporation, because counter tickets can sell out by mid-morning in peak season. Pony rides and snow play are arranged and paid locally. Return to Srinagar in the evening.

Day 3: Srinagar to Sonamarg day trip

On day three, drive to Sonamarg, the meadow of gold, along the Sindh River. It is about 80 kilometres and takes two and a half to three hours each way, so start early.

Sonamarg is the gateway to the high mountains and the old road to Ladakh. From the meadow you can take a pony ride or walk towards the Thajiwas Glacier, which holds snow well into summer, and from May to August you can try a short rafting stretch on the Sindh. Keep the day simple because of the drive, and return to Srinagar by evening.

Day 4: Srinagar to Pahalgam and overnight

Day four moves you to Pahalgam, the valley of the shepherds, on the Lidder River, about two and a half hours away through the saffron fields of Pampore. Rather than rush back, stay the night here.

Spend the afternoon walking by the Lidder, visiting the riverside viewpoints and, if you like, riding a pony up to the Baisaran meadow. Staying overnight means you wake to the river and the pines, and you are ready for the side valleys first thing. Dinner and overnight in Pahalgam.

Day 5: Pahalgam valleys and back to Srinagar

Give the morning to Pahalgam's three side valleys: Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari, reached by local union taxi from the Pahalgam stand. These are not included in most cab fares and are paid separately, in cash.

Aru is a gentle meadow, Betaab is the film-famous valley by the river, and Chandanwari is the snow point and the start of the Amarnath trail. After lunch, drive back to Srinagar past apple and walnut orchards, and check in for the night. River rafting on the Lidder is possible from May to August.

Day 6: Doodhpathri or Yusmarg day trip

Use day six for a meadow most visitors never reach. Doodhpathri, about ninety minutes from Srinagar, is a broad green meadow split by the milky Shaliganga stream, perfect for a picnic. Yusmarg, a little further, is quieter still, with pine forests and the option of a short walk or pony ride to Nilnag Lake.

Either one is a slow, beautiful day with far fewer crowds than Gulmarg or Pahalgam. It is the day guests most often say they did not expect to love. Return to Srinagar for the evening.

Day 7: Houseboat morning and departure

Keep the last morning for Dal Lake itself. If you can, spend your final night on a houseboat so you wake to the floating market and the lake coming to life, then take a last Shikara ride before you leave.

Use any spare time for shopping in the old city: saffron, walnuts, dried fruit, papier-mache and a pashmina shawl. Most departure flights leave around midday, and the airport is 30 to 40 minutes away with slow security, so plan your morning around your flight time and leave a buffer.

How much does a 7-day Kashmir trip cost?

A comfortable seven-day Kashmir trip costs roughly 20,000 to 30,000 per person on a land-only, twin-sharing basis, excluding flights. Here is where the money goes.

Prices rise in the tulip season, the summer holidays and the December snow season, and fall in the quieter shoulder months. Flights are the biggest single variable, so book them early. Best time to do this 7-day itinerary

Every season gives a different week. March to May brings blossoms and the famous Tulip Garden; June to August is green, lively and best for the high meadows; September to November brings golden chinars and clear views; and December to February is for snow, when Sonamarg may close and Gulmarg takes centre stage.

For a month-by-month view, see our guide on the best time to visit Kashmir. A week gives you enough buffer that a single rainy or snowy day rarely spoils the trip.

How to adapt this itinerary

This plan is a frame, not a rule. Honeymooners can drop a day trip for more time on the houseboat; families can swap Sonamarg for a second easy meadow; and photographers can add an early start for the gardens or the floating market.

If you want an offbeat week, replace Doodhpathri with two days in the Gurez valley across the Razdan Pass. If you prefer not to change hotels at all, skip the Pahalgam night and day-trip instead. Tell us your pace and we will shape the week around it; just contact us with your dates.

What to pack for a week in Kashmir

Pack layers whatever the month, because mornings and the high meadows are cool even in summer. Comfortable walking shoes matter, since most sightseeing is gentle walking, and a small daypack, sunscreen, a water bottle and personal medicines go everywhere with you.

For winter, add a heavy jacket, gloves, a cap, thermals and waterproof shoes; our Kashmir winter packing list has the full list. For a week, a medium suitcase plus a daypack is plenty; laundry is easy to arrange at most hotels.

Tips for a smooth week

Start each day by 8 or 8:30 AM to catch the quiet morning light and shorter queues. Keep cash for pony rides, union taxis and the gondola, agree the next day's plan with your driver the night before, and do not try to pair two far valleys in a single day.

Above all, keep one day loose. A week gives you the luxury of a weather buffer, and the best memories often come from the unplanned tea stop with a mountain view rather than the sight you ticked off in a hurry.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days too long for Kashmir? No; a week is relaxed rather than long, and the extra days are spent slowing down, not adding drives. Can I add Vaishno Devi to a 7-day trip? Yes, by starting in Katra, though it makes the week fuller; see our Jammu and Srinagar tour package. Is a week enough for a Kashmir honeymoon? It is ideal, with time for a houseboat, the meadows and a slow pace. For more route ideas, the Kashmir tour packages guides on Travel Wiki are a useful second read. Seven unhurried days, five landscapes and a houseboat finish make the most complete first trip to Kashmir there is.
