Skiing in gulmarg: The Gulmarg ski lift and gondola over snowy slopes

Skiing in Gulmarg: A Beginner's Guide to Your First Ski Trip

Key takeaways
  • The ski season in Gulmarg usually runs from late December to March.
  • Beginners learn on the gentle slopes near the village, with an instructor.
  • Rent skis, boots and poles in Gulmarg; there's no need to bring your own.
  • Gondola Phase 2 is for experienced skiers only, ideally with a guide.

Skiing in Gulmarg is one of the great winter experiences in India. The meadow at around 2,650 metres turns into a wide snowfield, the gondola carries skiers high up Mount Apharwat, and the snow is often deep and dry.

The good news for beginners: you don't need any experience, special fitness or your own equipment. Every winter, hundreds of first-timers put on skis in Gulmarg and leave a few days later able to make their first turns.

This guide covers when to go, how lessons work, what to rent and wear, and how to stay safe.

When is the ski season in Gulmarg?

Usually from late December to March, with the most reliable conditions in January and February.

The exact start depends on snowfall. Some winters, there's good snow before Christmas; in others the season starts properly in January. By March, the lower slopes can get softer and patchier, while the higher slopes still hold good snow.

For beginners, January and February are usually best: plenty of snow on the nursery slopes and the full range of lessons running.

Do you need ski experience to ski in Gulmarg?

No. Beginners are welcome and lessons start from zero.

Your first day usually covers putting on boots and skis, walking and sliding on flat snow, stopping with a snowplough, and getting up after a fall. By the second or third day, most guests are making gentle turns on easy slopes.

Fitness helps, but you don't need to be an athlete. If you can walk for a couple of hours comfortably, you can learn to ski.

How do you find a ski instructor in Gulmarg?

Book a certified instructor through your hotel, a recognised ski school or your tour operator.

Gulmarg has local ski instructors, ski schools and government-run courses. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering, based in Gulmarg, runs structured courses in the season. For short holidays, most travellers book private or small-group lessons by the hour or day.

Ask for a certified instructor, agree the price and duration in advance, and make sure equipment is either included or clearly priced.

Where do beginners ski in Gulmarg?

On the gentle nursery slopes close to the village, and later on the easier runs around Kongdoori.

Your first lessons will be on wide, gentle slopes near the hotels, where there's little risk and plenty of space. Once you can stop and turn confidently, your instructor may take you up to the Kongdoori area, where there are easier runs served by lifts.

What is the Gulmarg Gondola for skiers?

A two-phase cable car. Phase 1 goes to Kongdoori; Phase 2 continues high up towards the Apharwat summit.

Phase 1 is useful for beginners and intermediates and for anyone who wants views. Phase 2 opens up big, steep, off-piste terrain that has made Gulmarg famous among experienced skiers. It's not suitable for beginners.

Gondola operations depend on the weather and wind, and the queues can be long in peak season. Check current timings and tickets on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation website, and read our Gulmarg Gondola guide.

Is Phase 2 safe for skiing?

Only for experienced skiers with avalanche awareness, ideally with a qualified guide.

The terrain from Phase 2 is high, steep and largely ungroomed. Avalanche risk can be serious after heavy snowfall. If you're an experienced skier planning to ski there, hire a certified mountain guide, carry avalanche safety equipment and check the current avalanche conditions every day.

For beginners and most intermediate skiers, the lower slopes give plenty of fun with far less risk.

Do you need to bring your own ski equipment?

No. Rent skis, boots, poles and helmets in Gulmarg.

There are rental shops in Gulmarg that fit you on the spot. Good boot fit matters most: boots should feel snug but not painful. Ask for a helmet too, especially for children.

If you're a regular skier with your own boots, it can be worth bringing them, since boots are the most personal piece of kit.

What should you wear for skiing in Gulmarg?

Waterproof layers, warm gloves and eye protection.

  • Thermal base layers, top and bottom
  • A fleece or warm mid-layer
  • Waterproof ski jacket and trousers (these can often be rented)
  • Waterproof gloves, plus a thin liner pair
  • Ski socks, not cotton
  • Goggles or good sunglasses; snow glare is very strong at altitude
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF
  • A helmet (rent one if you don't have your own)

Read our winter packing list for the rest of your bag.

How many days should you ski?

Three days is a great start for beginners.

On day one you learn the basics, on day two you start linking turns, and by day three you're enjoying it. If you have more time, five days lets you progress to longer runs.

Our Gulmarg ski package gives you three days on the slopes, and our luxury winter holiday adds a ski resort stay and a heritage houseboat.

Is it better to stay in Gulmarg or Srinagar?

Stay in Gulmarg if you're skiing.

Driving up from Srinagar each morning costs time and energy, and the last stretch of road can be slow after snowfall. Staying in Gulmarg means you're on the slopes early, can rest at lunchtime and enjoy the snowy evening atmosphere.

What does a ski holiday in Gulmarg cost?

Less than most international ski resorts, but plan for lessons, rentals and gondola tickets.

The main costs are your hotel, ski lessons, equipment rental and gondola tickets. Prices rise around Christmas, New Year and weekends in peak season. Every quote we send lists these extras separately, so there are no surprises. See our Kashmir trip cost guide for typical extras.

How do you stay safe while skiing?

Take lessons, ski within your level and respect the mountain.

  • Always ski with an instructor while you're learning
  • Wear a helmet
  • Stop at the side of the slope, never in the middle
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks; altitude makes you tire faster
  • Don't ski off-piste without a qualified guide and avalanche equipment
  • Check the weather and follow any closures

What can non-skiers do in Gulmarg?

Plenty: sledging, snowshoe walks, the gondola, and long lunches with a view.

Many families have a mix of skiers and non-skiers. Non-skiers can ride the gondola, try a sledge, walk to the little church on the meadow or simply enjoy the snow with a cup of kahwa. Snow bikes and ATV rides are available too.

Can children learn to ski in Gulmarg?

Yes, with a patient instructor and short sessions.

Children often learn faster than adults. Keep sessions short, make sure they're warm and dry, and plan plenty of breaks with hot chocolate. Rent a helmet and make sure their gloves are waterproof.

What does a three-day beginner plan look like?

Short morning lessons, long lunches and plenty of rest.

Day 1: First steps

Get your boots and skis fitted, then spend two to three hours on the flattest nursery slope. You'll learn to walk on skis, slide, stop with a snowplough and get up after falling. After lunch, rest, or try sledging.

Day 2: First turns

Back on the nursery slopes for linking snowplough turns and controlling your speed. Most beginners start to feel the rhythm by the end of the day. In the afternoon, ride Gondola Phase 1 for the views.

Day 3: Longer runs

If you're confident, your instructor may take you to easier runs higher up, using a lift. Focus on smooth turns and stopping where you choose. Finish with a celebratory cup of kahwa on the meadow.

What mistakes do beginners make?

Most of them are easy to avoid.

  • Leaning back on the skis, which makes it harder to control your speed
  • Skipping lessons and trying to learn from friends
  • Boots that are too loose, giving you no control
  • Wearing cotton layers that get wet and cold
  • Skiing for too long on the first day and getting exhausted
  • Forgetting sunscreen, which leads to a painful sunburned face

Can you snowboard in Gulmarg?

Yes. Snowboard lessons and rentals are available.

Snowboarding usually takes a little longer to learn than skiing, and the first day involves more falls, so wear padded clothing and a helmet. Once it clicks, progress is often quick. Ask your instructor which suits you better if you're unsure.

How does altitude affect skiing?

You'll tire faster, so pace yourself and drink plenty of water.

Gulmarg sits at around 2,650 metres, and the gondola goes much higher. Most people feel fine in Gulmarg, but you may notice you're breathless sooner and need more rest. Avoid alcohol on your first evening, drink water through the day, and don't push yourself too hard on day one.

Skiing in Gulmarg: quick FAQs

What age can children start skiing?

Many instructors teach children from around five years old. Short, fun sessions work best.

Is skiing in Gulmarg expensive?

It's generally more affordable than skiing abroad. The main costs are lessons, equipment rental and gondola tickets.

What if there's not enough snow?

Snow is usually reliable in January and February. If your dates are fixed early in the season, keep a flexible plan and check conditions with us before you travel.

Can we ski and sightsee in one trip?

Yes. Ski for three days in Gulmarg, then spend a day or two in Srinagar for Dal Lake and a houseboat night.

What is Gulmarg like after a day of skiing?

Quiet, cosy and very snowy.

Gulmarg doesn't have a big nightlife scene. Evenings are for warm dinners, hot drinks by the heater and early nights before the next day on the slopes. On clear nights, the stars over the snowfields are spectacular. If you'd like a little more life, a short walk to a neighbouring hotel for dinner or tea is a pleasant change.

Your ski trip booking checklist

  • Check your dates fall in the main season, ideally January or February
  • Book your hotel in Gulmarg, not Srinagar
  • Pre-book ski lessons with a certified instructor
  • Confirm equipment rental and helmet hire
  • Check gondola timings and buy tickets where possible
  • Pack thermals, waterproof gloves, goggles and sunscreen
  • Keep a buffer day for snowstorms or flight delays
