Kashmir in winter: A snow-lined track through pine forest near Gulmarg after snowfall

Kashmir in Winter: A Snow Trip Planner for December to March

Key takeaways
  • Reliable snow in Gulmarg usually runs from late December to early March.
  • Chillai Kalan, the coldest 40 days, starts on 21 December.
  • Keep one buffer day: snow and fog can delay flights and roads.
  • Pack thermals, waterproof boots and a power bank; rent long coats locally.

Kashmir in winter is a different country from the green valley in the summer brochures. The meadows disappear under snow, the pine forests turn white, and the whole valley slows down around a warm kangri and a cup of noon chai.

For a lot of our guests, it's the trip they remember most. It's also the trip that needs the most careful planning.

This guide covers when the snow really arrives, what the cold is like, which places stay open, and how to build a winter itinerary that still works when the weather changes its mind. We plan winter trips every week from December to March, so everything here comes from what actually happens on the ground.

When does it snow in Kashmir?

Usually from mid-December to early March, with the heaviest and most reliable snow in January and February.

Gulmarg often gets its first proper snowfall in December, but the exact date changes every year. Some years the meadow is white by the second week of December; in others the main snow comes after Christmas.

Srinagar city gets fewer snow days than the hill stations. When it does snow in the city, it's magical: the Mughal gardens, the houseboats and the old wooden houses all turn white overnight. But don't plan a trip only around snow in Srinagar itself. If snow is the goal, plan around Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Month by month

  • December: first snowfalls, crisp blue days and short evenings. Christmas and New Year week is very busy in Gulmarg, so book early.
  • January: the heart of winter. The best chance of deep snow, and the coldest nights of the year.
  • February: still excellent snow, slightly longer days, and often the best month for a balance of snow and sunshine.
  • March: snow stays on the higher slopes of Gulmarg while the valley starts to thaw. The almond blossom in Srinagar arrives late in the month.

What is Chillai Kalan?

It's the harshest 40 days of the Kashmiri winter, from 21 December to the end of January.

During Chillai Kalan, nights in Srinagar regularly drop below freezing, and the hill stations get much colder. The edges of Dal Lake can freeze on the coldest mornings, and water pipes in older buildings sometimes freeze too.

It sounds tough, but this is also when Kashmir is at its most beautiful and its most local. Families gather around kangris (small clay fire pots tucked under the pheran, the long woollen cloak), bakeries sell hot girda bread at dawn, and many homes serve harissa, a slow-cooked winter dish, for breakfast.

Chillai Kalan is followed by Chillai Khurd (20 days) and Chillai Bachha (10 days), which are milder.

How cold does Kashmir get in winter?

Cold enough that you need proper winter clothes. Expect daytime temperatures of a few degrees above freezing in Srinagar, and well below freezing at night in January.

Gulmarg and Sonamarg are colder still, especially after sunset and when the wind picks up on the gondola. Pahalgam sits in a narrower valley and can feel very cold in the shade.

The good news is that winter days are often bright and still. In the sun, with the right layers, a snowy afternoon in Gulmarg can feel surprisingly comfortable.

Which places can you visit in Kashmir in winter?

Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar and, increasingly, Sonamarg.

Gulmarg

The star of any winter trip. Ride the gondola, try sledging or a ski lesson, and walk across the snow-covered meadow to the little St Mary's Church. Gulmarg is around 2,650 metres high, so the snow is usually deep and reliable from January.

After heavy snowfall, the last stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg may be open only to vehicles with snow chains or four-wheel drive. That's normal, and we plan for it.

Read our Gulmarg Gondola guide before you go, and check current tickets on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation website.

Pahalgam

Quieter in winter than in summer, and very pretty. The Lidder River runs between snowy banks and the pine forest is dusted white. Some valleys, like Aru and Betaab, can be hard to reach after big snowfalls, so treat them as a bonus rather than a promise.

Sonamarg

For years Sonamarg was largely cut off in deep winter. Road access has improved since the Z-Morh tunnel opened, and more travellers now visit in the snow. It is still weather-dependent, so we confirm the road on the morning of the trip.

Srinagar

Dal Lake on a misty winter morning, the Mughal gardens under snow and the warm bakeries of the old city. A Shikara ride in winter is quiet and beautiful; just wrap up well.

How many days do you need for a Kashmir winter trip?

Four to six days is ideal, including one buffer day.

Winter weather can close a road for a morning or delay a flight by a few hours. With a buffer day, a bad-weather day just moves your plan along; without one, you might miss Gulmarg completely.

Here's a winter itinerary we often recommend:

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar, Mughal gardens and a gentle evening by the lake
  2. Day 2: Drive to Gulmarg and stay the night
  3. Day 3: A full snow day in Gulmarg: sledging, a ski lesson, the gondola
  4. Day 4: Back to Srinagar for a cosy houseboat night
  5. Day 5: Pahalgam day trip, or keep it free as your buffer day
  6. Day 6: Departure

Sleeping in Gulmarg rather than driving up and back in one day makes a real difference in winter: you get the snow before the day-trippers arrive and you avoid driving icy roads in the dark. Our winter honeymoon package and luxury winter holiday are both built this way.

What should you pack for Kashmir in winter?

Layers, waterproof boots and a warm hat matter more than one heavy coat.

  • Thermal inner wear, top and bottom, at least two sets
  • A fleece or woollen sweater, plus a down or padded jacket
  • Waterproof, warm boots with good grip; trainers get soaked in minutes
  • Gloves, a woollen cap and a scarf or neck warmer
  • Woollen socks, more pairs than you think
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen: snow reflects a lot of sunlight
  • Lip balm and moisturiser; the cold air is very dry
  • A power bank, as power cuts are common in winter

You don't need to buy expensive snow gear before you travel. Long waterproof coats and gumboots are available to rent in Gulmarg for a small fee. Our full winter packing list goes into more detail.

Will flights and roads be affected in winter?

Sometimes, which is why we always build in flexibility.

Fresh snow or fog can delay flights into and out of Srinagar, usually by a few hours and occasionally by a day. The Jammu–Srinagar highway can also close after heavy snow or landslides near Ramban and Banihal, although the long tunnels have made the route far more reliable than it used to be.

Our advice:

  • Book a morning flight into Srinagar, so a delay still leaves you most of the day
  • Don't book a tight connection on your way home; leave a few hours spare
  • Keep your travel insurance details handy
  • Let us track road conditions for you; we update guests on WhatsApp each morning

How do you stay warm in hotels and houseboats?

Ask for a room heater and use the hot-water bottle trick.

Most hotels in Kashmir use electric heaters or bukhari (wood or oil stoves) in winter. Heaters are often charged separately, so check what's included when you book. Better hotels have central heating and heated blankets.

Houseboats are wonderful in winter but can be chilly. Book a good-category houseboat, ask for a heater in the room, and keep the curtains closed in the evening. Many hosts will happily fill a hot-water bottle for your bed if you ask.

What does a winter trip to Kashmir cost?

Usually a little less than peak summer in Srinagar, but Gulmarg can be expensive at Christmas, New Year and in ski season.

Winter-specific extras to budget for include room heaters, snow-chain vehicles, rented boots and coats, sledge rides and ski lessons. Our Kashmir trip cost guide explains the typical extras, and every quote we send lists them clearly.

What can you eat to stay warm?

Harissa, noon chai, kahwa and a bowl of rista or rogan josh.

Winter is the best season for Kashmiri food. Harissa, a slow-cooked mutton dish, is a winter breakfast speciality sold early in the morning in the old city. Noon chai, the salty pink tea, is drunk with fresh girda bread. Kahwa, the sweet saffron and almond green tea, keeps you warm on the gondola queue.

Read more in our Kashmiri food guide.

Is Kashmir in winter good for families and older travellers?

Yes, with the right pace.

Children usually love the snow, but they get cold and wet fast. Keep snow play to an hour or two at a time, carry a change of warm clothes, and plan a warm lunch indoors. For older travellers, avoid early-morning starts on icy roads and choose hotels with good heating and lifts.

Is it safe to travel to Kashmir in winter?

Yes, for normal sightseeing with a local driver, as long as you respect the weather.

Use a driver who knows winter roads, don't walk on frozen water, and don't go off-piste in Gulmarg without a qualified guide. Follow official advisories after heavy snowfall, and listen to your driver and hotel if they suggest waiting for a road to be cleared.

What can you do on a snowy rest day in Srinagar?

Slow down and enjoy the city's winter life.

  • Take a short Shikara ride on a still, misty morning, wrapped in blankets
  • Visit the Mughal gardens under snow; Nishat and Shalimar are beautiful when they're white
  • Walk the old city lanes and stop at a bakery for fresh bread and noon chai
  • Visit a papier-mâché or pashmina workshop and watch the artisans at work
  • Spend the afternoon on a heated houseboat with a book and a pot of kahwa

Our Old Srinagar heritage walk works well on a winter morning.

How do you photograph Kashmir in winter?

Shoot early and late, and protect your batteries from the cold.

Winter light in Kashmir is soft and low, which makes it wonderful for photographs. The first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset give golden light on the snow. Cold drains batteries quickly, so carry spares in an inside pocket. When you come indoors, leave your camera in its bag for a while so condensation doesn't form on the lens.

What should families know about a winter trip?

Keep days shorter and plan plenty of warm breaks.

  • Dress children in layers and bring spare gloves and socks
  • Keep snow play to short sessions, with warm drinks in between
  • Choose hotels with good heating and hot water
  • Avoid very early starts on icy roads
  • Carry snacks, as food options at the top of the gondola are limited

Kashmir in winter: quick FAQs

Is Dal Lake frozen in winter?

Not usually. The edges can freeze on the coldest mornings of Chillai Kalan, but it's rare for large parts of the lake to freeze solid. Never walk on frozen water.

Can you see snow in Srinagar?

Sometimes. Srinagar gets snowfall a few times in most winters, but it doesn't stay for long. Gulmarg is the most reliable place for snow.

Is the Gulmarg Gondola open in winter?

Yes, in normal conditions. It can pause in strong winds or heavy snowfall, so keep your plan flexible.

Do we need snow chains?

Your driver arranges them. After heavy snowfall, vehicles going up to Gulmarg may need chains or four-wheel drive, which is usually charged separately.

Ready to plan your winter trip?

Kashmir in winter rewards people who plan a little and stay flexible. Pick your dates, add a buffer day, and decide whether you want a night in Gulmarg in the snow.
