Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar: can you see all three in one trip?

Yes, and you only need to unpack once.

Stay in Srinagar and visit Gulmarg and Pahalgam as day trips, or spend one night in Pahalgam to break the drive. A Gulmarg Pahalgam combination fits easily into four or five days.

Adding Sonamarg? A Gulmarg Sonmarg pairing works the same way: Gulmarg one day, Sonamarg the next, both as return trips from Srinagar.

Srinagar to Gulmarg: how far is it?

About 50 km, or 1.5 to 2 hours by road.

The route runs through Tangmarg and apple orchards. In heavy snow, the last stretch may need a snow-chain vehicle. Gulmarg to Srinagar on the way back usually takes about the same time. More in our Gulmarg guide.

How far is Sonamarg from Srinagar?

About 80 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.

The Srinagar Sonmarg road follows the Sindh River and is one of the prettiest drives in Kashmir, so leave early and stop for photos. See our Sonamarg guide.

How far is Pahalgam from Srinagar?

About 95 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.

You'll pass the saffron fields of Pampore and the ruins of Avantipora. Many people do Pahalgam as a day trip, but an overnight stay is more relaxing. See our Pahalgam guide, and check the J&K Department of Tourism for official travel advisories before you go.

Can you drive from Gulmarg to Pahalgam or Sonamarg directly?

You can, but it's rarely worth it.

Gulmarg and Pahalgam are about 140 km apart, and Gulmarg and Sonamarg about 135 km. Both routes go via Srinagar anyway. Stay in Srinagar and visit each one on its own day.

How long is the Sonamarg to Pahalgam drive?

About 170 km, or 5 hours.

Again, it's usually better to return to Srinagar in between.

Why distances matter when planning Kashmir

Understanding the distances between Srinagar and the main valleys is the key to a sensible Kashmir itinerary. The famous places, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, lie in different directions from Srinagar, each within a few hours, which is exactly why the easiest plan is to base yourself in the city and visit them as day trips.

Trying to drive directly between the hill stations, rather than returning to Srinagar, wastes half a day each time on long mountain roads. Knowing the distances and drive times helps you avoid that mistake, sequence your days well, and keep each outing comfortable. Below are the approximate figures, followed by how to use them when you plan.

Srinagar to Gulmarg distance and drive

Gulmarg is the closest of the three famous day trips, about 50 kilometres from Srinagar, taking roughly one and a half to two hours each way. The road climbs steadily through Tangmarg into the meadow, and it is a comfortable morning drive that leaves plenty of time for the Gondola and the meadow.

Because it is close, Gulmarg makes an easy, relaxed day trip, and you can be back in Srinagar by evening. In winter, heavy snow can slow the final climb and sometimes requires a snow-chain vehicle or a short walk from where cars can park. Start early to make the most of the Gondola before the weather or the crowds build.

Srinagar to Sonamarg distance and drive

Sonamarg is the farthest of the classic day trips, about 80 kilometres from Srinagar, taking around two and a half to three hours each way along the Sindh River. Because the drive is longer, an early start is important, and the day is best kept simple: a pony ride or walk towards the Thajiwas Glacier and time by the river.

The road is scenic, following the river valley, but it is also the gateway to the high Zoji La pass towards Ladakh, so it can be busy. In winter the road beyond a point often closes with snow, which is why winter itineraries usually drop Sonamarg. In summer it is one of the loveliest drives in the valley.

Srinagar to Pahalgam distance and drive

Pahalgam lies about 90 to 95 kilometres from Srinagar, roughly two and a half to three hours each way, through the saffron town of Pampore and the apple orchards of the Lidder valley. It is far enough that many travellers prefer to spend a night there rather than rush back, especially if they want to see the Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari side valleys.

Those three side valleys are reached from Pahalgam by local union taxi and add time, which is another reason an overnight works well. The drive itself is pretty, passing saffron fields and orchards. If you are day-tripping, start early; if your schedule allows, a Pahalgam night turns a rushed day into a relaxed one.

How to sequence your day trips

With the distances in mind, a sensible sequence keeps your trip smooth. A common plan from a Srinagar base is Sonamarg on one day, as it is the longest drive and best done early; Gulmarg on another, as it is the closest and most flexible; and Pahalgam on a third, ideally with a night there to see the side valleys.

Do not try to combine two far valleys in a single day, and leave a flexible day for the weather, which can slow the mountain roads. Keep Srinagar sightseeing, the gardens, the lake and the old city, for the arrival and departure days. This rhythm, one valley per day from a single base, is the backbone of almost every good Kashmir itinerary.

Tips for the mountain drives

A few habits make the day-trip drives comfortable. Start early, both for the clearest weather and the quietest roads, and carry snacks and water, as food options thin out as you climb. Keep cash for pony rides, union taxis and the gondola, which are not included in your cab fare.

Travel by a private vehicle with a driver who knows the roads and the weather, agree the plan the night before, and allow buffer time, since drive times stretch in peak season and after snow. In winter, check whether the Sonamarg and Gulmarg roads are clear before setting out. Patience on the winding sections and an early start are the two secrets to easy Kashmir day trips.

Kashmir distance chart at a glance

Here are the approximate road distances and normal driving times we use when planning trips. Times assume clear roads and no long stops.

  • Srinagar to Gulmarg: about 50 km, 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Srinagar to Sonamarg: about 80 km, 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • Srinagar to Pahalgam: about 90 to 95 km, 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • Srinagar to Doodhpathri: about 42 km, 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Srinagar to Yusmarg: about 47 km, 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Srinagar airport to Dal Lake: about 14 km, 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Gulmarg to Pahalgam: about 140 to 150 km via Srinagar, 4 to 5 hours.
  • Sonamarg to Pahalgam: about 160 to 170 km via Srinagar, 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
  • Srinagar to Gurez: about 125 km, 5 to 6 hours over the Razdan Pass.
  • Jammu to Srinagar: about 250 km, 6 to 8 hours.

These numbers change slightly depending on which part of Srinagar you start from; the Dal Lake area and the old city can add 20 to 30 minutes in traffic.

How far is Doodhpathri and is it worth the drive?

About 42 km from Srinagar; it makes an easy, rewarding day trip.

Doodhpathri is a meadow in Budgam district with a cold, milky stream running through it, which gives the place its name, "valley of milk". The drive takes you through villages and pine forest, and the road is good for most of the way. It is quieter than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, so it suits couples and families who want open space without crowds. It is best from April to October; in winter the road can close after heavy snow. See our Doodhpathri tour packages.

What is the best order to visit Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam?

Base yourself in Srinagar, do Gulmarg and Sonamarg as day trips or one-nighters, and give Pahalgam its own overnight stay.

Because Srinagar sits in the middle, most good itineraries use it as the hub. Gulmarg and Sonamarg are close enough for day trips, though a night in Gulmarg lets you catch the first gondola. Pahalgam is far enough that two nights there are worth it. A typical five-night order is: Srinagar, Gulmarg (overnight), Pahalgam (two nights), back to Srinagar with a Sonamarg day trip. Ending in Srinagar keeps you close to the airport for the flight home. Our Kashmir 5 days itinerary follows this logic.

How do road conditions change with the seasons?

Summer roads are open and smooth; winter brings snow, closures and slower driving.

From April to October all the main routes are generally open and the drives match the times above. In winter, the road to Gulmarg usually stays open but needs snow chains on the last stretch after Tangmarg, and drives can take longer. The Srinagar to Sonamarg road often closes beyond a certain point after heavy snow, and Sonamarg may be accessible only for snow play near the entrance. Pahalgam stays reachable all year. During the Amarnath Yatra in July and August, traffic on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads can be regulated by convoy timings, so allow extra time.

Where are the good stops on each route?

Tangmarg on the Gulmarg road, Pampore and Awantipora on the Pahalgam road, and Kangan on the Sonamarg road.

Breaking a drive for tea and a short walk makes it more enjoyable. On the way to Gulmarg, Tangmarg has shops renting snow gear and stalls selling hot snacks. The Pahalgam road passes through Pampore, Kashmir's saffron town, where you can buy saffron and dry fruit, and Awantipora, with ruins of a 9th-century Avantiswami temple. Bijbehara is known for its chinar trees and bakeries. On the Sonamarg road, the Sindh river runs alongside, and Kangan and Gund have small dhabas for lunch.

How much does a cab cost for each route?

Roughly โ‚น2,500 to โ‚น4,500 for a day trip by sedan from Srinagar, more for an SUV.

Taxi rates are set by local unions and change each season. As a rough guide, a sedan day trip from Srinagar to Gulmarg, Sonamarg or Pahalgam costs from about โ‚น2,500 to โ‚น4,500, and an SUV like an Innova costs more. Remember that union taxis are compulsory for sightseeing inside Pahalgam and Sonamarg, which is extra. Packages that include a private cab for the whole trip are usually simpler and better value than hiring a cab each day.
