When is the best time for a Srinagar to Ladakh trip?

From about June to September, when the Zoji La and the high passes to Nubra and Pangong are open.

June and September are quieter; July and August are warmest but busier. Always keep a buffer day for road closures.

How do you avoid altitude sickness in Ladakh?

Travel by road from Srinagar so you climb gradually, or rest fully on your first day if you fly into Leh.

Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol for the first two days and tell your driver at once if you feel unwell.

Should you go to Ladakh by road from Srinagar or fly to Leh?

Go by road if you have a week or more and want the scenery: the drive over Zoji La, the Drass War Memorial and the moonland of Lamayuru are highlights in themselves, and climbing gradually helps you adjust to the altitude.

Fly to Leh if you are short of time. You save two days of driving, but you must rest fully on the first day, because Leh sits at about 3,500 m.

How much does a Srinagar Ladakh tour package cost?

Our road trips from Srinagar to Leh start at about ₹33,000 per person for six nights, and the longer route with Gulmarg, Nubra and Pangong costs about ₹42,000.

Prices include hotels, camps in Nubra and at Pangong, breakfast and dinner, a private vehicle with an experienced mountain driver and inner-line permits. Flights out of Leh are extra.

What should you pack for Ladakh?

Warm layers even in July, because nights at Pangong drop below freezing, plus a windproof jacket, sunglasses, a high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm.

Carry basic medicines, a refillable water bottle and some cash, since ATMs are few outside Leh.
