- Eight days covers every major Kashmir destination plus one offbeat valley.
- Stay two nights in Pahalgam and one each in Gulmarg and Sonamarg.
- Add Doodhpathri, Yusmarg or a houseboat night with the extra days.
- A 3-star 8-day package costs from about ₹28,000 per person, excluding flights.
With eight days in Kashmir, you can finally slow down. Instead of racing from one valley to the next, you can sleep in the mountains, linger by rivers, spend a night on a houseboat and add a quiet meadow that most visitors never see.
This 7 nights 8 days Kashmir itinerary is the trip we would plan for our own family. It covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri, keeps every drive comfortable and leaves room for the unexpected moments that make Kashmir special.
Is 8 days too long for Kashmir?
Not at all. Eight days lets you see everything without rushing and adds offbeat places.
Most visitors manage five or six days, which covers the main destinations. Eight days means overnight stays in the mountains rather than day trips, time for a houseboat night, and an extra day for Doodhpathri, Yusmarg or Gurez. It also gives you a buffer if the weather closes a road for a day.

Day 1: Srinagar and a houseboat night
Arrive, settle into a houseboat, and enjoy the lake at sunset.
Begin with a deluxe houseboat on Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake. After lunch, take a long Shikara ride past the floating gardens and markets, and watch the sunset from the water. Dinner on the houseboat, with the lights of the Boulevard reflected on the lake, is a perfect start. Our Dal Lake houseboat guide helps you choose.
Day 2: The best of Srinagar
Gardens in the morning, viewpoints at midday, the old city in the afternoon.
Visit Nishat and Shalimar gardens early, then Cheshma Shahi and Pari Mahal. After lunch, climb to the Shankaracharya Temple, then explore the old city: Khanqah-e-Moula, Jamia Masjid and the bazaars. Evening on the Boulevard. Our Srinagar itinerary has more ideas.
Day 3: Sonamarg overnight
About 80 km, three hours; stay the night to enjoy the valley without day-trip crowds.
Sonamarg, the meadow of gold, sits beside the Sindh river beneath glaciers and peaks. Walk or ride a pony to the Thajiwas glacier, and take a local union cab to higher points if open. Staying overnight lets you enjoy the valley in the quiet evening and early morning. In winter, when the road may close beyond the entrance, we swap this for an extra Gulmarg or Pahalgam day.
Days 4 and 5: Gulmarg
Two days of gondola, snow or meadows, and relaxed walks.
Drive from Sonamarg to Gulmarg via Srinagar (about four hours). On day 5, ride the gondola early (tickets on the official website): Phase 1 to Kongdoori and Phase 2 towards Apharwat if weather allows. In winter, try sledging or a ski lesson; in summer, walk to Khilanmarg or play golf. Our Gulmarg trip guide has everything you need.
Days 6 and 7: Pahalgam
Two nights by the Lidder river, with valleys, forests and gentle walks.
Drive from Gulmarg to Pahalgam via Srinagar, stopping at Pampore for saffron and Awantipora's temple ruins. On day 7, hire a union taxi to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, or take a pony to Baisaran meadow. Adventurous travellers can try rafting on the Lidder. Pahalgam's evenings, by the river under the stars, are some of the most peaceful in Kashmir.
Day 8: Doodhpathri and departure
Return to Srinagar; visit Doodhpathri if your flight is late, or shop and relax.
Doodhpathri is a quiet meadow about 42 km from Srinagar, with milky streams and pine forest. If your flight is in the evening, it makes a lovely final outing. Otherwise, spend the morning shopping for pashmina, saffron and dry fruit, and head to the airport three hours before your flight.
Where should you stay each night?
Houseboat (night 1), Srinagar hotel (night 2), Sonamarg (night 3), Gulmarg (nights 4 and 5), Pahalgam (nights 6 and 7).
This plan means fewer long drives and more time in the mountains. If you prefer fewer hotel changes, stay in Srinagar for nights 1 to 3 and make Sonamarg a day trip.
How much does an 8-day Kashmir trip cost?
From about ₹28,000 per person for 3-star hotels, and ₹40,000 to ₹60,000 for 4-star, excluding flights.
A 7-night package for two with hotels, a houseboat night, a private cab, breakfast and dinner starts at around ₹28,000 per person. Activities paid locally, such as the gondola, union taxis, ponies and rafting, add ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 per person. See our Kashmir tour package for 7 nights 8 days and the Kashmir trip cost guide.
How does the itinerary change by season?
- Winter: replace Sonamarg with more time in Gulmarg's snow, and choose heated hotels.
- Spring: add the tulip garden in April and almond blossom in March.
- Summer: all routes open; book early for May and June.
- Autumn: golden chinar trees and clear skies; one of the best times for this route.
Can you add Gurez or Ladakh?
Gurez fits in place of Doodhpathri and Sonamarg in summer; Ladakh needs three or four more days.
For offbeat travellers, Gurez is a stunning addition from May to October. Ladakh needs a longer trip; see our Srinagar Ladakh tour package.
Tips for a smooth 8-day trip
- Book gondola tickets online in advance.
- Keep the Sonamarg night flexible in case of road closures.
- Carry warm layers in every season.
- Budget for union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
- Use the extra days to rest; you do not have to fill every hour.
Frequently asked questions
Is 8 days enough for Kashmir? Yes, for every major destination plus one offbeat valley. Where should I stay? Srinagar, Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. What does it cost? From about ₹28,000 per person for 3-star, excluding flights. Can I do this in winter? Yes, with more time in Gulmarg. Should I include a houseboat? Yes, one night. For a shorter version, see our Kashmir itinerary 7 days.
Why overnight stays beat day trips
Because Kashmir's mountain resorts are most beautiful early and late, when the day visitors have gone.
On day trips you arrive with the crowds and leave before sunset. Staying overnight in Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam lets you walk the meadows at dawn, catch the first gondola and watch the peaks turn pink at dusk. It also cuts the daily driving, so you spend more of your holiday outside the car.
How does this itinerary work for honeymooners?
Swap one Gulmarg night for a second houseboat night, and add romantic extras.
Couples on an 8-day honeymoon often want more lakeside time and fewer early starts. Start with two nights on a deluxe houseboat, then one night in Sonamarg, two in Gulmarg in a mountain-view room, and two in Pahalgam by the river. Ask for flower decoration on the first night, a candlelight dinner in Pahalgam and a long sunset Shikara ride. A photoshoot in traditional Kashmiri dress makes a beautiful keepsake. Our Kashmir honeymoon package for 6 nights can be extended by a night.
How does this itinerary work for families?
Keep the same route but plan shorter days and more play time.
With children or elderly parents, eight days is ideal because you can keep every drive under three or four hours. Children love the Shikara, the gondola's Phase 1, pony rides, sledging in winter and the trout farms in Pahalgam. Grandparents enjoy the gardens and riverside walks. Choose an SUV, family rooms and hotels with lifts. Our Kashmir family holiday package follows a similar plan.
Can you do this itinerary in winter?
Yes, with Sonamarg replaced by an extra Gulmarg or Pahalgam day.
From December to February, the road to Sonamarg can close beyond the entrance after snowfall, and the valley is very cold. We usually adjust the route: two nights on a houseboat or in Srinagar, three nights in Gulmarg for snow, skiing and the gondola, and two in Pahalgam for snowy valleys. Choose hotels with good heating and pack properly using our winter packing list.
What makes eight days different from six?
Overnight stays in the mountains, a houseboat night, an offbeat meadow and a weather buffer.
On a six-day trip, Sonamarg is usually a day trip and there is little room for anything unplanned. Eight days lets you sleep in Sonamarg, spend two nights in Gulmarg, add Doodhpathri, and still have spare time if a road closes or the gondola shuts for wind. Many guests say the extra two days made the trip feel like a real holiday rather than a sightseeing tour.
Which offbeat places can you add with the extra days?
Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Gurez, Aru and the springs of South Kashmir.
Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are quiet meadows close to Srinagar. Gurez, a remote valley beyond the Razdan Pass, opens in summer and is spectacular. Aru near Pahalgam is lovely for walks and camping. The springs and gardens of South Kashmir, including Achabal, Kokernag and Verinag, fit well with a Pahalgam stay. Read our South Kashmir travel guide and Gurez valley travel guide.
How do you avoid fatigue on a long trip?
Alternate busy days with slow ones, and keep evenings free.
Eight days of sightseeing can be tiring if every day starts at 7 am. We alternate: a busy gondola day, then a relaxed riverside day; a long drive, then a short one. Keep evenings unplanned, enjoy hotel gardens and bonfires, and do not feel you must see everything. The slow moments are often the ones guests remember most.
What should you pack for eight days?
Layers for every season, comfortable shoes, rain protection and enough warm clothing for the gondola top.
Eight days means you may see several kinds of weather, from warm afternoons in Srinagar to cold mornings in Sonamarg and snow at the top of the gondola. Pack thermals, a fleece and a warm jacket even in summer, a light rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. If your hotels have laundry, use it midway rather than packing extra. Carry original ID for every adult and a printed copy of your itinerary.
Which package matches this 8-day itinerary?
Our 7 nights 8 days package follows this route, with private cab, tested hotels and flexible days.
If you would rather not arrange every hotel and transfer yourself, our Kashmir tour package for 7 nights 8 days covers the same route with breakfast and dinner, a Shikara ride and a private vehicle throughout. We can swap the houseboat night, add Doodhpathri or Gurez, upgrade one special night to a luxury hotel, or change the order of the mountain stays to suit the season. For a longer trip, our 8 nights 9 days package adds a further day of rest or exploration.
What does a typical day on an 8-day trip look like?
A relaxed breakfast, one main sight, a long lunch, an easy afternoon and a quiet evening.
Because you have eight days, there is no need to pack three destinations into one day. A typical day starts with breakfast around 8 am, followed by the day's main experience: the gondola, a valley visit or a glacier walk. Lunch is unhurried, often at a riverside dhaba or meadow café. Afternoons are for a short walk, a pony ride or simply sitting with kahwa and the view. Evenings are spent at your hotel, by a bonfire in the hills or on a houseboat deck in Srinagar. This rhythm lets you return home rested.
Is an 8-day Kashmir trip good value?
Yes; the per-day cost falls on longer trips because the cab and hotels are booked for longer stretches.
Longer trips usually work out cheaper per day than short ones, because you spend fewer days on airport transfers and more on enjoying Kashmir. Hotels often give better rates for multi-night stays, and you avoid paying peak last-minute prices for rushed changes. For many travellers, eight days delivers the best balance of cost, comfort and experience.
