- Six days covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg without rushing.
- Stay one night in Gulmarg and two in Pahalgam to cut down on driving.
- Keep the last day in Srinagar so you are close to the airport.
- Budget roughly ₹18,000 to ₹28,000 per person for a 3-star trip, excluding flights.
Six days is the sweet spot for a first Kashmir trip. It is long enough to see the four big names, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and short enough to fit into one week of leave.
We plan this route for our guests more than any other, and over the years we have tuned it to cut the driving and give each place the time it deserves. Here is the exact Kashmir itinerary for 6 days we recommend, with the reasons behind each choice.
Is 6 days enough for Kashmir?
Yes. Six days lets you see all the main destinations at a comfortable pace.
With five days you have to choose between Sonamarg and a slower Pahalgam stay. With seven or more you can add Doodhpathri, Gurez or a houseboat night. Six days balances the two: four destinations, one night outside Srinagar in Gulmarg, two nights in Pahalgam, and a relaxed last day for shopping. It works in every season with small changes, which we explain below.
Kashmir itinerary 6 days at a glance
- Arrive in Srinagar, Shikara ride on Dal Lake, overnight in Srinagar or on a houseboat.
- Srinagar to Gulmarg, gondola ride, overnight in Gulmarg.
- Gulmarg to Pahalgam via Srinagar and Pampore, overnight in Pahalgam.
- Pahalgam valleys: Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari, overnight in Pahalgam.
- Pahalgam to Srinagar with a day trip to Sonamarg, or Sonamarg on the way back, overnight in Srinagar.
- Mughal Gardens, old city and shopping, departure.
Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar and Dal Lake
Land, check in, rest, then take a sunset Shikara ride.
Most flights reach Srinagar by midday. The airport is about 14 km from Dal Lake, so you should be at your hotel or houseboat within an hour. Keep the afternoon light, because many travellers feel tired after an early flight. Around 4 pm, take a Shikara ride on Dal Lake past the floating gardens, Char Chinar island and the lotus beds, and watch the sun set behind the mountains. In the evening, walk along the Boulevard or try kebabs at Khayam Chowk. If you are on a honeymoon, this is the night for a houseboat; our Dal Lake houseboat guide explains how to choose one.
Day 2: Srinagar to Gulmarg
About 50 km and two hours; ride the gondola and stay the night.
Leave Srinagar by 8 am. The road passes paddy fields and villages, then climbs through pine forest from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers. Head straight to the gondola, because queues build after 10 am; tickets are sold on the J&K Cable Car Corporation website. Phase 1 goes to Kongdoori; Phase 2, weather permitting, climbs towards Mt. Apharwat at nearly 4,000 m. Book tickets online in advance on the official website; our Gulmarg Gondola guide has the details. In the afternoon, walk across the meadow, visit the little St. Mary's Church and the Maharani Temple, or take a pony ride. Staying in Gulmarg means you see the meadow empty at dusk and dawn, when day-trippers have gone, and that is when it is most beautiful.
Day 3: Gulmarg to Pahalgam
About 140 to 150 km, four to five hours, with stops at Pampore and Awantipora.
After breakfast, drive back towards Srinagar and continue on the Jammu highway towards Pahalgam. Stop at Pampore, the saffron town, to buy saffron and dry fruit from a reputable shop, and at Awantipora to see the ruins of the 9th-century Avantiswami temple. Bijbehara, with its old chinar trees, is a good place for tea. Turn off at Anantnag and follow the Lidder river up the valley to Pahalgam. Arrive by mid-afternoon, check in, and walk along the river in the evening.
Day 4: Pahalgam valleys
Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari by local union taxi.
Outside cabs are not allowed to Pahalgam's three main sightseeing points, so you hire a local union taxi at fixed rates. Betaab Valley, named after the film shot here, has a clear stream, green lawns and pine forest. Aru Valley is a wide meadow and the starting point for treks to Lidderwat and Kolahoi. Chandanwari, the start of the Amarnath Yatra route, often keeps snow well into summer. If you prefer something more active, take a pony to Baisaran meadow or try rafting on the Lidder. In the evening, relax by the river; Pahalgam's nights are quiet and starry.
Day 5: Sonamarg day trip and back to Srinagar
Leave Pahalgam early, drive to Sonamarg, and return to Srinagar by evening; or split it into two shorter days.
Sonamarg, the meadow of gold, sits about 80 km north-east of Srinagar on the road to Ladakh. From Pahalgam it is a long day, so many guests prefer to return to Srinagar first and visit Sonamarg the next morning, then fly out in the evening. Either way, the highlights are the Thajiwas glacier, reached on foot or by pony, the Sindh river and the wide valley views. Local union cabs run to Zero Point and other higher spots. If the road is closed in winter, we swap Sonamarg for Doodhpathri or a second Gulmarg visit.
Day 6: Srinagar sightseeing and departure
Mughal Gardens, Shankaracharya Temple, the old city and some shopping.
Spend the morning at the Mughal Gardens, Nishat and Shalimar, then visit Pari Mahal or the Shankaracharya Temple for views over the city. If you have time, walk through the old city to the wooden Khanqah-e-Moula shrine and the Jamia Masjid. Leave about three hours before your flight; security at Srinagar airport includes extra screening points before the terminal.
Where should you stay each night?
Srinagar on nights 1 and 5, Gulmarg on night 2, and Pahalgam on nights 3 and 4.
This split means only three hotel changes and no day longer than about five hours of driving. If you prefer one base, you can stay in Srinagar every night and do day trips, but the Pahalgam day becomes long and tiring. A houseboat works well for night 1 or night 5.
How much does a 6-day Kashmir trip cost?
Roughly ₹18,000 to ₹28,000 per person for a 3-star trip, ₹28,000 to ₹45,000 for 4-star, excluding flights.
The price depends on hotel category, season and group size. A 3-star package for two with a private cab, breakfast and dinner, and a Shikara ride typically starts around ₹18,000 per person. Extras paid locally include the gondola, union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and pony rides; keep ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 per person for these. See our Kashmir 5 nights 6 days package and the Kashmir tour package for 5 nights for current prices, and our Kashmir trip cost guide for a full breakdown.
How does the itinerary change by season?
Winter adds snow time in Gulmarg; spring adds the tulip garden; summer and autumn follow the plan as written.
- December to February: Sonamarg may be closed beyond the entrance, so we add a second snow day in Gulmarg or Pahalgam. Hotels with heating matter.
- March to May: add the tulip garden in April and almond blossom at Badamwari in March. Book early.
- June to August: all roads open. Expect crowds in June and Amarnath Yatra traffic in July and August on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads.
- September to November: golden chinar trees, clear skies and fewer crowds; one of our favourite times.
Adapting the 6-day plan for honeymooners
Add a houseboat night, a candlelight dinner and mountain-view rooms.
Couples often swap night 1 or night 5 for a deluxe houseboat, ask for flower decoration on the first night and a candlelight dinner in Pahalgam. The plan stays the same; only the stays and extras change. See our Kashmir honeymoon packages.
Adapting the 6-day plan for families
Keep drives short and add play time.
With children or elderly parents, stay two nights in Gulmarg and drop Sonamarg, so no day has more than three hours in the car. Kids love the gondola's Phase 1, pony rides and sledging in winter. Our best Kashmir family tour package follows this gentler version.
What should you pack for six days?
Layers, comfortable shoes, sunglasses and a warm jacket in every season.
Even in July, the top of the gondola and Pahalgam's evenings are cool. Pack a fleece and a light jacket in summer, and full winter gear from December to February using our winter packing list. Carry original ID for every adult; it is checked at hotels and the gondola.
Mistakes to avoid on a 6-day Kashmir trip
- Booking a flight out on the evening you return from Sonamarg or Gulmarg.
- Leaving gondola tickets until the day.
- Forgetting to budget for union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
- Trying to add Doodhpathri, Yusmarg and Gurez into six days; save them for another trip.
- Packing only summer clothes for the mountains.

About ₹18,000 to ₹28,000 per person for 3-star, excluding flights. Can I do this in winter? Yes, with more time in Gulmarg if Sonamarg is closed. Is a houseboat worth it? Yes, for one night. What does a typical day on this trip feel like?
Breakfast by eight, two to four hours of sightseeing, a long lunch, and a quiet evening.
Kashmir is not a place to rush. On most days of this itinerary you leave the hotel after breakfast, reach the day's main sight by mid-morning before the crowds, and stop for lunch at a riverside dhaba or a meadow café. Afternoons are for walks, a pony ride or simply sitting with a cup of kahwa. Evenings are calm, with dinner at your hotel and, in Srinagar, a stroll along the Boulevard. Your driver stays with you throughout, knows the roads and the best tea stops, and can adjust timings if you want a slower morning. This rhythm is why our guests come home rested rather than exhausted.
Why book this itinerary with a local Srinagar team?
Because roads, weather and queues change daily, and a local team can change your plan the same day.
A road closure in Sonamarg, a windy day that shuts the gondola's Phase 2, or a sudden snowfall in Pahalgam are normal parts of Kashmir travel. Being based in Srinagar, we hear about these first and can swap days, move a hotel night or reroute the cab without fuss. We know the hotels personally, so we can tell you which rooms have the best views and which properties have reliable heating in winter. That local knowledge turns a good plan into a smooth trip.
What should you book first for a 6-day trip?
Flights, then hotels in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, then gondola tickets.
Flights to Srinagar rise quickly in price, so book them as soon as your dates are fixed. Gulmarg has a limited number of hotels, and Pahalgam fills up in summer, so these come next. Gondola tickets open online in advance and sell out on busy days. With a package, we handle the hotels and cab, leaving you to book flights and the gondola, or we can arrange the gondola for you.
Which package matches this 6-day itinerary?
Our 5 nights 6 days packages follow this route with private cab and tested hotels.
If you would rather not book each hotel yourself, our Kashmir 5 nights 6 days package and Srinagar to Srinagar package tour cover this itinerary with breakfast and dinner, a Shikara ride and a private vehicle throughout.
