Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers, is Kashmir's most famous mountain resort. In winter it is a snowfield with some of the best powder skiing in Asia; in summer it is a rolling green meadow ringed by pine forest and snow peaks. And at its heart is the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world.
We send guests to Gulmarg nearly every day of the year. This Gulmarg trip guide brings together everything we tell them: when to go, what to do, where to stay, how long to spend and how to avoid the common mistakes.
Where is Gulmarg?
In Baramulla district, about 50 km west of Srinagar, at around 2,650 m.
Gulmarg sits in a cup-shaped meadow on the slopes of the Pir Panjal range. The drive from Srinagar takes about one and a half to two hours via Tangmarg, with the last 13 km climbing through pine and fir forest. Our Srinagar to Gulmarg guide has the full route.
When is the best time for a Gulmarg trip?
December to March for snow and skiing, April to June for flowers and melting snow, and September to November for clear skies and quiet.
- Winter (December to February): deep snow, skiing, sledging, heavy demand around New Year.
- Late winter and spring (March to April): spring skiing, sunny days, snow still at the top.
- Summer (May to August): green meadows, wildflowers, golf, pony rides, family crowds.
- Autumn (September to November): crisp air, golden light, fewer people.
What are the best things to do in Gulmarg?
Ride the gondola, ski or sledge in winter, walk the meadow, visit St. Mary's Church and the Maharani Temple, and ride a pony to Khilanmarg.
- The Gulmarg Gondola: Phase 1 to Kongdoori and Phase 2 towards Apharwat. See our Gulmarg Gondola guide.
- Skiing and snowboarding: nursery slopes for beginners, off-piste for experts. Read our skiing in Gulmarg guide.

- Drung waterfall: a short detour near Tangmarg, frozen in deep winter.
How many days should you spend in Gulmarg?
One night is the minimum; two nights for skiers and winter snow lovers.
A day trip works but means you share the gondola with every other day visitor. One night lets you ride the first gondola and enjoy the quiet evening. Skiers should plan at least two or three days. Families with children often enjoy two relaxed days of snow play.
Where should you stay in Gulmarg?
Close to the gondola for skiers, around the meadow for views, and in Tangmarg for budget stays.
Gulmarg has a limited number of hotels, from simple lodges to luxury resorts. Staying near the gondola base saves walking in ski boots. Hotels around the meadow have lovely views. Budget travellers sometimes stay in Tangmarg, about 13 km below, but this means driving up each morning. Book early for winter and May to June. See our Gulmarg tour packages.
How much does a Gulmarg trip cost?
A day trip for two costs roughly ₹7,000 to ₹11,000 with the gondola; overnight stays add hotel costs.
The main costs are the cab from Srinagar, gondola tickets, hotels, snow gear rental and activities like skiing or ponies. Our detailed Gulmarg trip cost guide breaks it all down.
What should you pack for Gulmarg?
Warm layers in every season; full winter gear from December to March.
Gulmarg is always cooler than Srinagar, and the gondola top is cold even in summer. In winter, bring thermals, a down jacket, waterproof boots, gloves, a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen. In summer, a fleece and a light jacket are enough. Our winter packing list has the details.
Is Gulmarg good for families?
Very good: Phase 1 of the gondola, sledging, ponies and the meadow suit all ages.
Children love the snow and pony rides. Keep Phase 2 for older children and adults, as the altitude and cold are much greater. Choose a hotel with reliable heating in winter, and plan a slower pace. Our Kashmir family tour packages include Gulmarg.
Is Gulmarg good for honeymooners?
Yes; a snowy room with a view, the gondola together and quiet evenings make it very romantic.
Couples love Gulmarg's cosy hotels in winter and the flower-filled meadow in summer. Ask for a mountain-view room and a candlelight dinner. Our Kashmir winter honeymoon package includes Gulmarg.

A short history of Gulmarg
From a royal summer retreat to a world-class ski resort.
Gulmarg's name is said to come from Gauri Marg, after the goddess Parvati, and was later changed to Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers. Kashmir's rulers used it as a summer retreat, and in the British era it became a popular hill station with a golf course, church and ski club. The modern gondola, opened in stages from the late 1990s, turned it into an international skiing destination.
What does a perfect Gulmarg day look like?
Breakfast at 7:30, the first gondola, snow or meadow time at Kongdoori, lunch, a slow afternoon walk and sunset on the meadow.
Start early, ride Phase 1 and, if the weather is good, Phase 2 before the clouds build. Spend time at Kongdoori sledging or walking, have lunch back in Gulmarg, then walk across the meadow to St. Mary's Church and the Maharani Temple in the afternoon. As the day-trippers leave, the meadow grows quiet, and sunset over the peaks is unforgettable.
What is Gulmarg like in summer?
Green, cool and full of wildflowers, with snow lingering near the top of the gondola.
Many visitors imagine Gulmarg only under snow, but summer has its own magic. From May to August, the meadow turns bright green and fills with wildflowers, especially buttercups, daisies and forget-me-nots. Shepherds bring their flocks up to graze, and the air smells of pine. Temperatures stay pleasant, usually between 15 and 25°C during the day, making it a welcome escape from the heat of the plains. The gondola runs as usual, and snow often survives near Apharwat into June. Families enjoy pony rides to Khilanmarg, picnics on the meadow and walks through the forest to small viewpoints. Golfers can play one of the highest green golf courses in the world, and hikers can attempt the challenging walk to Alpather Lake, which stays partly frozen well into summer.
What is Gulmarg like in winter?
A deep-snow wonderland with skiing, sledging and cosy hotels.
From December to March, Gulmarg is covered in snow, often more than a metre deep in January and February. The meadow becomes a vast white bowl where children sledge and adults try skiing. The gondola carries skiers and sightseers into the snowfields, and Phase 2 opens up some of the best off-piste terrain in Asia. Hotels light fires and serve hot kahwa, and evenings are quiet and starry. It is cold, often well below freezing at night, so warm clothing and a heated room matter.
How do you get around within Gulmarg?
On foot, by pony or sledge, and by local transport to the gondola.
Gulmarg is small, and most places are within walking distance across the meadow; the J&K Tourism website lists official information and advisories. In winter, walking in deep snow can be tiring, so many visitors use local transport or sledges pulled by locals to reach the gondola base. Ponies are available in summer for longer trips, such as Khilanmarg. Agree the price and route before you start.
Is Gulmarg safe?
Yes; it is one of Kashmir's most visited resorts, with a strong police and army presence.
Gulmarg is very safe for tourists. The main risks are natural: cold, altitude on Phase 2, slippery paths in winter and avalanche danger for off-piste skiers. Follow the advice of locals and guides, respect weather warnings, and never ski off-piste without a qualified mountain guide.
Can you combine Gulmarg with other destinations?
Yes; most Kashmir itineraries pair Gulmarg with Srinagar, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
Gulmarg fits easily into any Kashmir trip. Many travellers spend one night in Gulmarg between Srinagar and Pahalgam. Remember there is no direct road from Gulmarg to Pahalgam or Sonamarg; you return through Srinagar. Our Kashmir itinerary 6 days shows how it fits.
What food can you find in Gulmarg?
Hotel restaurants, a few cafés and dhabas, and snack stalls at the gondola base.
Food options in Gulmarg are more limited than in Srinagar, and prices are higher because supplies come up from the valley. Most hotels serve buffet or à la carte meals with Kashmiri, north Indian and continental dishes. Small dhabas near the market serve rajma, rice and Maggi noodles, much loved by cold visitors. Carry water and snacks when you go up the gondola, as options at the top are limited.
Can you visit Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar?
Yes; it is about two hours each way, and most short itineraries do it as a day trip.
A day trip works well if you leave early and ride the gondola in the morning. You will share Gulmarg with other day visitors, but you can still enjoy the meadow, the gondola and snow play. If you have the time, though, a night in Gulmarg is far more rewarding: you see the meadow at dusk and dawn, catch the first gondola and avoid driving there and back in one day. Read our Srinagar to Gulmarg guide for timing tips.
How do you plan a Gulmarg trip around the weather?
Check the forecast the evening before, ride the gondola early, and keep a second Gulmarg morning if Phase 2 matters.
Mountain weather changes quickly. Phase 2 of the gondola closes in high wind, heavy snowfall or poor visibility, and clouds often build over Apharwat after midday. Ask your driver or hotel about the forecast each evening and adjust your plan: if tomorrow looks clear, go up first thing; if it looks stormy, spend the day on the meadow and try the gondola the next morning. Staying two nights gives you this flexibility, which is especially valuable for skiers and for anyone who has dreamed of standing on Apharwat.
Why book your Gulmarg trip with a local team?
Because snow, wind and queues change daily, and a Srinagar-based team can adjust your plan at once.
We hear about road conditions, gondola closures and fresh snowfall before most visitors do, so we can move your Gulmarg day, arrange chains or a 4x4, or suggest the best time to ride. We also know which Gulmarg hotels have reliable heating and the best views, which matters a great deal in winter. That local knowledge turns a good Gulmarg plan into a smooth, memorable trip for couples, families and skiers alike.
