How do you reach Gurez from Srinagar?
By road, about 5 to 6 hours via Bandipora and the 3,300 m Razdan Pass.
The road is usually open from June to October. Visitors register at a checkpoint on the way, so carry original photo ID.
What is there to see in Gurez Valley?
The pyramid-shaped Habba Khatoon peak, named after Kashmir's 16th-century poet-queen, rises above Dawar, the main village.
Walk through log-house villages of the Dard-Shin community, follow the Kishanganga river, and visit the meadows and springs around Dawar. In clear weather the Razdan Pass itself gives sweeping views back over the Wular Lake and the valley.
How many days do you need for Gurez?
Plan at least two nights in Gurez, because the drive each way takes most of a day.
A 4-night trip covers Srinagar and Gurez; a week lets you combine Gurez with Gulmarg and Pahalgam, as in our Gurez and Kashmir tour.
What are the stays like in Gurez?
Simple guesthouses, homestays and a few tourist huts, with basic rooms, warm bedding and home-cooked Kashmiri food.
There are no large hotels and electricity can be irregular, so carry a power bank and a torch. Most guests say the hospitality more than makes up for the simple rooms.
