- Flying into Srinagar is the quickest way to reach Kashmir.
- By rail, travel to Jammu or Katra, then take the train to Srinagar (about 3 hours from Katra).
- By road, Jammu to Srinagar is about 250 km and takes 6 to 8 hours.
- Allow extra time at Srinagar airport: security is stricter than at most Indian airports.
How to reach Kashmir is one of the first questions we get from guests, especially those travelling with family or arriving from southern and eastern India.
The short answer: fly into Srinagar if you can. But the railway through the mountains has changed things, and for some travellers a train or a road trip through Jammu now makes more sense.
This guide compares every option, with real travel times, practical tips and the mistakes we see most often.
What is the fastest way to reach Kashmir?
A flight to Srinagar. From Delhi, the flight takes about an hour and a half.
Srinagar's airport (airport code SXR) has direct flights from several major Indian cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, with more routes added each season. From other cities, you'll usually connect through Delhi.
Once you land, Dal Lake is roughly 30 to 45 minutes away by road, depending on traffic. All our packages include pickup from the airport.
Tips for flying into Srinagar
- Book a morning arrival, so you can enjoy the afternoon and won't lose the day if your flight is delayed
- In winter, fog and fresh snow can delay flights; leave a buffer on your return
- Sit on the left side of the plane when flying in from Delhi for a chance of mountain views (it depends on the route on the day)
- Book early for April, May, June and October, when fares rise quickly
What should you know about leaving Srinagar airport?
Reach the airport at least two hours before your flight, and preferably a little more.
Security at Srinagar airport is stricter than at most Indian airports. There's an additional security check before you even reach the terminal building, and queues can build up at busy times. Keep your ID ready, pack hand luggage simply, and don't leave things to the last minute.
Can you reach Kashmir by train?
Yes. Trains now run through the mountains from Katra to Srinagar.
The railway line climbs through tunnels and over spectacular bridges, including the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, and the cable-stayed Anji Khad bridge. The journey from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station to Srinagar takes about three hours.
Most travellers coming by rail take a long-distance train to Jammu Tawi or Katra first. Services and timetables are still being expanded, so always check current trains and seat availability on IRCTC before you plan.
Who should take the train?
- Families who want Mata Vaishno Devi darshan in Katra first
- Travellers who don't like flying, or who are coming from northern India by rail anyway
- Anyone who wants the journey itself to be part of the holiday
Our Jammu and Srinagar rail tour is built around this route, and our helicopter darshan package uses the train after Vaishno Devi.
How do you reach Kashmir by road from Jammu?
On the Jammu–Srinagar highway, about 250 km in 6 to 8 hours.
The road has improved enormously. Long tunnels like the Chenani–Nashri tunnel and the Navyug tunnel at Banihal have cut hours off the old route over the mountain passes. You'll drive past the Chenab river, through the hill town of Ramban, and emerge from the Navyug tunnel at Qazigund into the Kashmir valley.
Things to know about the highway
- The Ramban stretch is narrow in places and can slow down with heavy vehicles
- After heavy rain or snow, landslides can close the road for a few hours or longer
- Travel in daylight; it's safer and the views are far better
- Take a break in the hills around Patnitop, or stay a night there to break the journey
Our Jammu Kashmir travel package with Patnitop does exactly that. You'll find more detail in our Jammu to Kashmir trip guide.
What is the Mughal Road?
A scenic seasonal road from the Jammu region to Shopian in South Kashmir, over the Pir Panjal range.
The Mughal Road crosses the high Pir Ki Gali pass and passes meadows and waterfalls that most travellers never see. It's only open for part of the year, usually from late spring to late autumn, and closes in winter. Opening dates change with the snow.
It's a beautiful drive for experienced road-trippers. For a first visit, the main highway or the train is simpler.
Can you reach Kashmir from Ladakh?
Yes, over the Zoji La pass from Kargil to Sonamarg, usually from early summer to autumn.
This high-altitude road connects Leh and Kargil with Sonamarg and Srinagar. Many travellers combine Kashmir and Ladakh in one road trip, either starting in Srinagar and ending in Leh or the other way round.
The route is typically open from around May or June to November, depending on snow. Our Srinagar Ladakh tour package covers it in twelve days.
Which option is best for you?
It depends on where you're starting, your budget and how much time you have.
- Short trip (3 to 5 days): fly into Srinagar. Every hour counts.
- Vaishno Devi first: train or fly to Jammu, do darshan in Katra, then take the train to Srinagar.
- Coming from Punjab, Himachal or Delhi by road: drive the highway and break the journey at Patnitop.
- Kashmir and Ladakh together: fly into Srinagar and out of Leh, or the reverse.
- Travelling with elderly parents: fly, or take the train from Katra; avoid long road days.
How do you get from the airport or station to your hotel?
With a pre-booked cab. All our packages include pickup and drop.
Srinagar airport also has prepaid taxi counters if you're travelling independently. From Srinagar railway station, the city centre and Dal Lake are about half an hour away. If you're staying on a houseboat, the cab drops you at the lakeside ghat, and a Shikara takes you across to the boat.
Do you need a permit to visit Kashmir?
Indian citizens don't need a permit for the main tourist places like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
Carry a government photo ID for every adult. You'll need it at hotels, the gondola and checkpoints. Some remote areas near the Line of Control, such as Gurez, have checkpoint registration. Foreign nationals should check current rules for restricted areas before planning those routes.
Will your phone work in Kashmir?
Postpaid connections from anywhere in India work in Jammu and Kashmir. Prepaid SIM cards from other states do not.
If you're on a prepaid connection, plan ahead: keep a postpaid number in your group, or use hotel Wi-Fi. Download offline maps for the hill stations too, as signal can be patchy in places like Gurez and on mountain roads.
What's the best time to travel to Kashmir?
April to June and September to October are the most popular months for sightseeing; December to February are best for snow.
Book transport early for peak season and the October holidays, when flights and trains fill quickly. Our best time to visit Kashmir guide explains what each season looks like.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking the last evening flight home after a long sightseeing day
- Planning to drive Jammu to Srinagar and then go straight on to Gulmarg the same day
- Assuming a prepaid SIM will work
- Forgetting photo ID for children over the age set by the airline or hotel
- Not leaving a buffer day in winter
How do you reach Kashmir with children or elderly parents?
Choose the shortest, simplest journey, even if it costs a little more.
For families with small children or older parents, a direct flight to Srinagar is almost always the best choice. It avoids long road days and mountain bends that can cause motion sickness. If darshan at Vaishno Devi is part of the plan, consider the helicopter option in Katra and the train to Srinagar instead of a full day on the highway.
- Book seats together early, especially in peak season
- Request wheelchair assistance at the airport when you book your tickets
- Carry motion-sickness tablets for mountain drives
- Keep medicines, snacks and a warm layer in your hand luggage
What should you carry in your hand luggage?
Your ID, medicines, a warm layer and anything valuable.
- Government photo ID for every adult traveller
- Printed or downloaded tickets and hotel details
- Medicines, with prescriptions where needed
- A warm jacket: Srinagar can be much cooler than where you started
- Phone charger and a power bank
- A small snack and an empty water bottle
How do you get from Jammu to Katra?
By road or train; it's about 50 km and roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road.
If you're flying into Jammu or arriving at Jammu Tawi station and heading to Vaishno Devi first, the drive to Katra is straightforward. Trains also connect Jammu and Katra. Many families spend a night in Katra after darshan before continuing to Srinagar by train the next morning.
What does a good arrival day look like?
Gentle. Don't plan big sightseeing on the day you arrive.
Arriving by morning flight: check in, rest for an hour, then visit the Mughal gardens and enjoy a sunset Shikara ride on Dal Lake.
Arriving by train from Katra: settle into your hotel, then take an easy evening walk along the Boulevard.
Arriving by road from Jammu: you'll have had a long day, so plan a quiet dinner and an early night.

How do you reach Kashmir from South or East India?
Usually by a connecting flight through Delhi, or a direct flight where one is available.
From cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata, check direct flights to Srinagar first; when there isn't one on your dates, a connection through Delhi is the most common route. Leave at least two to three hours between flights, especially in winter, and consider spending a night in Delhi if your only options are a very early or very late connection. Travelling by train from South India is possible but takes several days, so most families fly.
